"Television has given us some bizarre crossovers throughout the years," says Alan Sepinwall. "There was the time Mulder and Scully from The X-Files were followed by the camera crew from Cops. Or the episode when the St. Elsewhere senior doctors stopped by Cheers for a drink. Or when Gordon Shumway from Alf somehow guest-starred on Mr. Robot. Hell, John Munch alone has been part of at least four that would give a logical mind an aneurysm. But even a trained, cynical TV brain such as mine was not adequately prepared for the sudden, strange, absolutely magical crossover that happened in (Thursday's midseason premiere)." Sepinwall adds: "Only three weeks to go. It’s hard to imagine the show doing anything more surprising than our latest guest star, but then, it would have been hard to imagine this one."

Because if you haven’t, this is gonna be really hard to explain…” (Laughs) He had, thankfully. I think he watches it with his kids. And he was like, 'I totally get it, I’m in.'"
Schur on working with the surprise guest-star (https://tv.avclub.com/mike-schur-on-making-the-judge-s-dreams-come-true-with-1840910984): "He’s just completely unflappable in every role he does. I’m a huge fan. That’s the No. 1 reason he’s on (The Good Place): I just love the guy and think he’s an incredible performer."
