This is one of those people who I've always been surprised has lived as long as he did, and now I found out he was much younger than I thought.

According to one article I read, he suffered a stroke in 2014.

As many of you know, last night, January 8, 2020, Buck Henry, best known as the writer for the hit Mel Brooks-created sitcom "Get Smart," died at age 89 of a Massive Heart Attack at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

Born on December 9, 1980 in New York City, New York, Henry Zuckerman was the son of silent movie actress Ruth Taylor and Paul Zuckerman, the latter a Stockbroker who formerly served in the U.S. Air Force; known as Buck, his nickname since childhood, Henry didn't legally become Buck Henry til the late '70s, during which he served as occasional host of "Saturday Night Live."

Besides writing for "Get Smart," Buck Henry also created the short-lived 1967 sitcom "Captain Nice," the titular character of which was played by William Daniels, futurely of the hit '80s Hospital Drama "St. Elsewhere."

He also appeared in a guest-starring role on the hit '80s sitcom "Murphy Brown" in the episode "My Dinner With Einstein," where he portrayed Dr. Victor Rudman, a Physicist in love with the titular character played by Candy Bergen.

Buck also directed, along with Warren Beatty, the 1978 film "Heaven Can Wait," as well as 1980's theatrical "First Family" and the 1989 TV Movie "Trying Times." He is survived by his wife Sally Zuckerman.

Obviously we have a disagreement here, one that as far as I know has been in dispute for decades, Mel Brooks claims he and only he created Get Smart, Henry claims he co-created it with Brooks. Does anyone know if this dispute was ever settled.

I don't know if it'll ever be settled. The official credit in the show is "Created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry" so the "with" in lieu of "and" leaves it open for speculation.

As far as actual impact on the series long-term it's important to note that Buck Henry stayed on as story editor and occasional writer throughout its first two seasons whereas Brooks wrote a handful of early season one episodes then left the project entirely.
