Great post as usual Steve! Since they don't list the running time, i posted on the original thread and was quite pleased with how fast they arrived. Notice the Tina Cole Picture on the back covers! LOL......and credited to American Broadcasting Company.

I noticed Here Comes Charley has dramatically sped up and edited end credits. This could account for the 24+ minute times.

So season 5 has only 8 episodes with their original uncut 25:30 run times while all the others are edited or compromised in one form or another. It's a no sale for me, I'll pass on these as I passed on seasons 3 and 4.

Isn't season 6 the first season with color episodes? If season 6 gets released, maybe the episodes will be uncut with their proper run times but I won't hold my breath about it.

Season 6 (first season on CBS and the first season produced in color) is the part of the syndication package which would have been updated and mastered to tape from 35mm in the 80s or 90s. The credits on most episodes were sped up (but not as much as these S5s), probably to match the original syndication films.

The only problem I'm aware of with season 6 is with the first episode. It has a 24+ minute length, and IIRC the problem is a truncated scene where Steve is dining with Miss Coulter. I have the original, full syndication version of that, which is slightly better in that scene than the TV Land version. It appears to me that there is probably a bad section in the original film, which had to be scrapped and edited out. No way this will be corrected. Season 6 will probably be mastered from these tapes, and will be a keeper, for sure.

I think season 7 has 3 22+ minute episodes, which again will probably not be corrected, plus the same sped-up credits as season 6. Season 7 will also be a must-have.

After looking at some of the 24 minute episodes of season 5, I'm convinced the short length is due to the dramatically sped-up credits. It's all there, it's just really quick--unlike season 12, where they're sped up, and cut. But the impressive thing is the picture quality--on some of the 24 and 25 minute episodes I've viewed, I'm convinced they found some 35 mm copies, and they look great! (Yes, Retro, I saw your post--you aren't buying, but others might be interested!)

I or someone really needs to find a way to communicate with CBS about season 12--they MUST do some work on that!

I haven't responded to this news till now but I am very very happy that they're not only keeping up with new season releases but that they are coming fast and furious. In fact so fast I haven't had a chance to even get to season 3 yet. May have to start watching one a day instead of one episode a week.

I'm so glad also to see practically every single episode is over 24 minutes, which means it's already better than the 22" versions you get from TV. I see that 2 of them are just over 22", I'll bet you there must be a song performed in those 2 22 min. episodes, it's a shame they will not allow original music.

My next natural question is is the original background music heard in Season 5?? That's the big negative for me when they do that.

I think anyone who doesn't buy these at over 24 minutes seems to be just looking for an excuse not to buy especially if the original background music is included.

I'm waiting for Amazon to offer these though.

For incidence (a Lum & Abner reference), right now I'm still watching a Season 2 epis. every Monday. But it's a bit annoying because I will first watch the Nick or TV Land version just to hear the original background music then I'll watch the uncut version from the commercial discs to see all the scenes that were cut from the TV versions. So I am basically watching the same episode twice. It's a good thing I like this show so much. If they had only released these with the real music background it wouldn't take an hour to watch a 1/2 hour show.

But the point being now with Seasons 3 & 4 coming up with all the original background music intact I won't have to be watching everything twice :crazy:anymore. That'll be real nice.:)

At least the Coffeehouse epis. has a little over 23 min. but the other few of the short changed episodes are a little over 22 minutes. I think each of them must have had a song in them, this is the only reason they cut these things down on the commercial discs. I'll bet they cut out poor Bub's short little ditties he'll pop up with once in a while while working around the house.

Based on S3 and S4 the 22+ minute episodes don't seem to involve music cuts. In every instance I've compared those with the MeTV version (which is normally close to 23 minutes), the MeTV version is the same short version as the DVD, but to be 100 percent sure somebody would have to check the TV LAnd or Nick at Nite version. That short thing in the frog episode from season 1 wouldn't bring it to 22 minutes. And Carolina in the Morning from season 3 and that K-K-Katie thing brought those episodes into the 23 minute range.

Come to think of it I could compare some of the S4 22 minute episodes with the Nick version. I think I'll do that and report back tomorrow.
