The Christmas-themed “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" kicked off The Simpsons' three-decade-plus run on Dec. 17, 1989, but it wasn't originally supposed to be the first episode. “Some Enchanted Evening," with Penny Marshall as babysitter Ms. Botz, was planned to be the first episode. But the animation was so terrible, the episode was pushed back and it became the Season 1 finale. “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" is "one of the few episodes from season one that still holds, which is impressive for the first episode of any show, but especially a comedy, which often takes its time before finding a groove (think: 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation, etc.)," says Josh Kurp. "But 'Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire' had two factors working in its favor: 1) the show’s creative team worked out the hiccups through nearly 50 shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, and 2) it wasn’t supposed to be the premiere."

Happy 30th Anniversary, The Simpsons

When The Simpsons first debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show in their famous short cartoon segments little did people know that The Simpsons would soon become an iconic part of TV history and from the moment the first ever The Simpsons episode aired in 1989 FOX knew from the start that the show would turn into a monster hit. And since it's first airing The Simpsons has never stopped being a monster hit and made The Simpsons huge cartoon celebrities by having merchandise such as video games dolls clothing comics and much more to appearing in commercials to having their own personal area in the Universal Studios theme parks. And by having a huge fanbase keeps The Simpsons surviving and even with the deaths of Phil Hartman Marcia Wallace and Russi Taylor The Simpsons has managed to keep surviving. The only way I think The Simpsons will get cancelled is if Julie Kavner or Nancy Cartwright or even Yeardley Smith decide to retire. But I have a great feeling that The Simpsons will still be here to stay
