December 15, 2019

Chuy Bravo, the sidekick to comedian Chelsea Handler on her E! Network talk show "Chelsea Lately", died Saturday night at age 63.

Bravo’s family said in reports that he was hospitalized Saturday while visiting family in Mexico City. The cause of death has not been determined, but allegedly involved a stomach ache and an emergency room visit.

He had just celebrated his 63rd birthday on December 7th.

Bravo was born in Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, in 1956 as Jesus Melgoza, and he joined his family in immigrating to the San Fernando Valley when he was age 15.

He joined Handler in 2007 on "Chelsea Lately", which ran until 2014.

Chelsea Handler took to Instagram to remember Chuy Bravo:

“I loved this nugget in a big way, and I took great pleasure in how many people loved him as much as I did and do. @chuybravo gave us so much laughter and I’ll never forget the sound of his laughter coming from his office into mine. Or his “business calls” with his “business manager,” or his shoe rack with all his children-sized shoes.

I’ll never forget him coming to Christmas with my family one year in the Florida keys, and when my niece who was 5 or 6 at the time—saw him, she ran in the other direction saying she was scared. My sister and I were mortified and were apologizing to Chuy, who told us, ‘it’s ok, lots of little kids get scared when they see big kids coming their way.’ I love you, Chuy!”

I was so sad to hear this yesterday. Chuy was such a significant part of Chelsea Lately, always with a smile, never a bad thing to say. All of the former comedians of Chelsea Lately have said nothing but wonderful things about him. He would always stop to take pictures with fans when they'd see him at airports, etc.

Such a loss. Way too young to go.

RIP, Chuy. You will be missed. :(
