In Season One, Episode Two "The Manhunt", Barney has barricaded Mayberry and refuses to let anyone pass threatening arrest but one woman pipes up that he can't arrest her, she's his MOTHER! Once she's said that line, she goes offscreen never to be seen again for the rest of the series despite the fact that she evidently lived in or near Mayberry- and only vaguely referred to as though she and Mr. Fife were deceased and/or had lived somewhere else.

Barney's Mother was played by one Lillian Culver who actually did look as though she could have been Frances Bavier's (Aunt Bee's) somewhat prettier sister. Alas, her given name was never mentioned and even Aunt Bee never pipes up to Barney to 'Give your mother _____, my best regards!'- as a polite Southern matron would have- to say nothing of sharing any memories of having grown up with Barney's mother and Andy's father- her late brother!

It was mentioned Andy and Barney were cousins in early season 1. That went the way of the dodo bird also.

Barney also stops Mayor Pike at the roadblock. Unfortunately, those scenes are edited out on TV Land.

This is so important, but almost never mentioned.

I think Barney's mother must have passed away after that episode, and like ope's mother, the period of grief isn't chronicled in the actual show. If she had simply moved away from Mayberry, I think she'd still be mentioned here and there.

I remember when Barney's Cousin Virgil showed up but don't remember if Andy mentioned also being Barneys cousin.

Actually, she was mentioned later. In The Clubmen episode, when Barney gets upset at Floyd for not asking about the name of the club, he says "You're always asking me when I'm gonna get married and how much I send
my mother every month".
