Buck Henry is turning 89 today. Henry, who grew up in New York and studied at Dartmouth, has worked as a comedian and actor. He starred in the 1971 film Taking Off, and has had supporting roles in films such as The Man Who Fell To Earth, Gloria, and Grumpy Old Men. Henry is best known, though, as a writer and director.
In 1965, Henry and Mel Brooks (https://lebeauleblog.com/2017/06/28/june-28-happy-birthday-mel-brooks-and-richard-rodgers/) created a new series for NBC about a very inept secret agent named Maxwell Smart. Get Smart ran for four seasons on NBC and a fifth on CBS. While Brooks left the series early on, Henry remained involved as a writer and story editor for several years, and won an Emmy for writing in 1967.

Henry has received Oscar nominations for screenwriting, for The Graduate, and for directing, for Heaven Can Wait (which was his feature directing debut). Henry also directed and wrote the 1980 comedy First Family. His screenwriting credits include Catch-22, What’s Up Doc?, The Day of the Dolphin, and To Die For.
