View Full Version : Why So Little Posting On These Forums?
MIKEPR 11-27-2019, 06:25 PM Don't know if this is the right section but anyway.
It seems like for many sections dedicated to old TV shows you'll find posts on the front pages that are 5 years old or more.
In some cases if a show lasted 1 or 2 years there's probably not much to say but even those that lasted longer can be the same way.
Maybe not all but the one's I've looked over.
So why is this?
Dude111 11-27-2019, 06:53 PM Almost every site I am on has died off big in the last 5 years or so.........
I think if they had stayed ON GOOD SOFTWARE,they might not of but alot of sites have gone to crap and It seems like people dont like it........
PhoenixAcres 11-27-2019, 08:58 PM Message boards in general have fallen severely in popularity over the last decade thanks to competing social media sites like facebook.
Facebook seems to be in the early stages of decline itself, and hopefully people will take that opportunity to rediscover message boards. Personally, I've always found forums like this a superior form of internet discussion.
TVFactFan 11-29-2019, 01:48 PM Because it's no longer 2008
stevea 11-29-2019, 07:43 PM I really hope things trend the other way at some point. Certain so-called social media sites are nothing but a cesspool, and probably drive a large number of people away.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Facebook used to be a site where people would post varying pictures of interest to their friends. I think they're strayed far from that idea, too. All this, just my opinion.
MIKEPR 11-29-2019, 08:34 PM While I might understand why it may stop new people from joining forums like these I can't see why it would drive away existing members especially a good one and moderated well.
Chocolate Moose 12-02-2019, 11:19 AM Facebook has hurt message boards, for sure.
Dude111 12-02-2019, 11:31 AM Facebook is the worst/most intrusive site online!!!!! (The sooner it goes down the better in many peoples opinion)
Crusinforabrusin2.5 12-02-2019, 11:54 AM I'll log on and check the new posts and almost 95% of the posts are from the game threads.
The traffic hasn't slowed down necessarily, but people seem to not post as much about classic television as they use to

I wonder why?
Even on the old IMDB boards there was limited traffic for Classic TV.
stevea 12-02-2019, 04:34 PM The games are the most popular threads in the classic shows.
If you look at the current sitcoms there isn't much posting at all. Probably because there aren't many popular current sitcoms.

well post more and it will be active
favoriteshow 12-03-2019, 01:33 AM I think there are way too many subforums on this site.
I should be able to click Message Boards -> Current Sitcoms, and then see all the threads for current sitcoms in one place. I'll more likely view threads of sitcoms I didn't know much about but are getting actively discussed.
The same type of grouping can be done for the other decades. Instead, each sitcom has it's own forum which is too unwieldy.

Same with some of the other boards such as 2000's Sitcoms and the 2010's Sitcoms board.
icecream 12-03-2019, 04:46 PM Facebook is the worst/most intrusive site online!!!!! (The sooner it goes down the better in many peoples opinion)I totally disagree. I like Facebook, but still post here fairly regularly. There is room for both, and I certainly wouldn't want Facebook going under.

Even if they are shows I don't like, there is a place for fans of them to discuss it here. Every show board lumped together would not be good, we do have the General Sitcoms and General Dramas board where it is for discussion of multiple shows.

I agree with your second paragraph but I do like having a subforum for each show. I think there should be a way to filter only the subforums you want (by decade, etc.) when you click "View Today's Active Threads".
We just could use more folks who post on multiple boards. We still have quite a bit of activity for having less than 200 members logging in on a daily basis and around 2000 in the last 6 months. The last few months had decreased activity for some reason, but maybe people are home more often in the winter months.
If we had only sections for General Sitcoms News and Questions, Current Sitcoms, Classic Sitcoms and Chit Chat, it would look a lot more active. People would complain then because things weren't organized or easy to find. The current format that we've always used works. The sitcoms which aren't on DVD or air regularly on TV are difficult to discuss. The boards are here for people who wish to use them.

I don't think it would be possible to even set it up that way. The way it is now the decades are set as the parents and the sub-forums are set as the child forums.
The issue is not with having too many sub-forums. We just don't have that many active members logging in on a regular basis. Even when we had many more regulars, the classic sitcoms were always more popular. That's always been our audience. It's our bread and butter.
You could subscribe to any forums you are interested in and then follow them in the User CP - Subscribed Threads section.
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/photos/subscribetothisforum.jpg
You can view subscriptions in the User CP. Individual threads can also be subscribed to. There's also an option to receive e-mail notifications.
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/subscription.php?folderid=0
You could also create some custom searches for only the forums you are interested in.
Add &include= and the forum id at the end with a comma separating any of the forums
only General Sitcoms Online News and Discussion & TV Series on DVD/Streaming
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/search.php?do=getdaily&include=27,538
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/search.php?do=getnew&include=27,538
You can also exclude any forums from the searches by adding &exclude= and the forum id at the end with a comma separating any of the forums
No Chit Chat - Games
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/search.php?do=getdaily&exclude=346
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=346

You can include and exclude individual forums from the search by the methods listed above. I'm not sure how many forums ids it would work with. I don't think it will work by decade since no posts are allowed in the decades listings.
An easier way would be to just subscribe to the forums you are interested in and view them in the User CP.

Thanks. I'm glad we still have some active long-time members like yourself after all these years. We just lost a lot of people to Facebook, Twitter, etc. We still have a good core group.

How come anyone would quit a group because of those 2 sites?
OH Nuts! 12-06-2019, 10:11 AM Thanks. I'm glad we still have some active long-time members like yourself after all these years. We just lost a lot of people to Facebook, Twitter, etc. We still have a good core group.
Yep. And I think I’m one of them. Facebook Shmacebook and Twitter bore me to tears. Do almost no posting on either
Chocolate Moose 12-06-2019, 11:20 AM Facebook is totally different than this site!
stevea 02-06-2020, 10:50 PM If you like to be 100 percent tracked, seemingly with everything you do online, Facebook is your place.
And IMO Twitter is a bot-fested cesspool.
I hear the game boards are active here.....

MIKEPR 02-07-2020, 03:22 PM I never read those but they're probably pointless and should be closed.

Dude111 02-08-2020, 01:01 AM Ohhhhhhhhhh... Hehehehe!!!

everything you post is pointless
Crusinforabrusin2.5 03-17-2020, 08:17 PM Facebook has Groups where you can talk Classic TV and the like. Big reason why many people are leaving forums like these. It's more convenient for people to use Facebook than it is to use a message board

A lot of the old members have moved on to Facebook.
MIKEPR 03-18-2020, 08:46 AM Wonder why they'd do that?
Wonder why they'd do that?
I have the same thought as you.
