A former Doctor Who actress has revealed that she 'burst into tears' following her epic comeback to the BBC sci-fi series
Sophie Aldred, 57, was 25-years-old when she was cast as Ace - one of the Time Lord’s companions - in Doctor Who in 1987 and continued with the role up until 1989 when the series was first cancelled.
However, three decades later, the actress has now resurrected the role for a specially-shot trailer for the Blu-ray release of Doctor Who: Season 26 – The Collection.
It has been revealed that Sophie's character Ace is now the head of a philanthropic foundation called A Charitable Earth.
The organisation was first introduced in the kid-friendly spin-off of Doctor Who - The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Speaking out about reprising the role many years on, Sophie admitted that it was an emotional affair as she first read the script.
Talking at a BFI screening to mark the release of the Blu-ray set, Sophie explained: 'I can think of no better tribute and celebration [of Ace] than Pete’s fantastic trailer,” Aldred added.
'I was just so thrilled when Pete sent through the script - in fact, I was so thrilled that I burst into tears, because it was really emotional.'
Speaking about her character's development, Sophie noted: 'When I first heard about A Charitable Earth, I thought, "Huh? Ace working for a charity?"
'And then I thought, "No, hang on a minute…" because of her experience and the fact that Ace has got a real heart. She wants to do right.
'I could see her heading up a corporation called A Charitable Earth. I thought that was just right.'
Following her appearance on Doctor Who, Sophie has starred in TV series such as Shadow Play and Sergeant Stripes.
