That would just make you a doormat for your friends to take advantage of. It's not Alice's responsibility to make sure her friends are paying their rent on time. Belle is an adult and should know that rent is the top priority among anything else. I have never been late with rent and never will be because as an adult you know a roof over your head is far more important than anything else. I don't like the character of Alice very much but in this situation, I'm glad she didn't enable Belle's bad habits when it came to her neglecting her responsibilities.

Alice was doing her job. It wouldn't be very fair to the other tenants who actually pay their rent if Alice showed favoritism to her friend. And if Belle was any kind of real friend, she wouldn't expect Alice to accommodate her.
