“The really big idea of this season is that Carrie Mathison steps into Nicholas Brody’s shoes,” executive producer Alex Gansa said at the TV press tour. “That’s the first big part of the season. The second big part is the real resolution of the primal story of Homeland, which is the relationship of a mentor and a protege, between Saul and Carrie. That’s what you’ll see resolved by the end of the 12 episodes.” Claire Danes added: “I thought that was very elegant storytelling. There’s that perfect symmetry. I think psychically it fuses Carrie with Brody in a way that felt right.” Danes also said the final season will have her character trying to understand the legitimacy of her country’s concerns. “She can be challenged in every way, but if her patriotism is questioned, I think that’s the most profound insult she can imagine,” Danes said. “That was interesting to play and explore. It was a good entry point.”
