In the episode where Lisa tried to end deer hunting with a petition either Oliver or Drucker mentions there's only 28 people in Hooterville!

Yet the way they make references to people living in the town it's fair to say at least a few hundred people live there. You wouldn't have a train stop and airport for a town of only 28 people!

They also apparently have an entire school.

We know that Hooterville, Pixley, and Crabwell Corners are all extremely close to each other and the boundaries are far from reliable. It's possible that depending on the circumstance any resident of any town can claim to be from another.

For what it's worth the airport, Trans-Pixley Airlines, was based in downtown Pixley and not Hooterville.

I lived for several years in a hamlet with about 25 residents. There had been an elementary school until 1966, a post office until 1902, a bank and a train depot (a "flag stop") until the 1930s, and a little grocery store until the 1980s. There were still a church, a town hall, and an auto body shop in the 1990s. Even some very small communities can have some services.

The town? Monti (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monti,_Iowa). I lived there from 1984-1987-ish.

I imagine any time they had extra folks milling about in Hooterville, they were from outlying areas not actually within the legal 'city limits' of that locale. But then again, it's Hooterville where the elevation changes from a few inches to thousands of feet depending on that week's script! LOL

LOL @ Arnold oinking up a storm!! That is true! :D

I thought of Steve ! Wasn't sure what year the census was taken, if he was already living there or not ? Also Daughter Kathy Jo , and the railroad men, Charlie and Floyd! ;)

Yeah I thought of the railroad guys too. Didn't one of the actors die during the show's run?

I also thought of Dr. Craig, but it would either be Kate or her in the count.

Do we know that Kimball lives there? He's the county agent, so could live elsewhere.

He's part of the Hooterville volunteer fire department so he probably does. Supposedly he lives with his mother but commutes to the county seat where his office is.

Also Mrs. Haney , sometimes Mr. Haney has a wife! Mr. Kimball's Mom could've been Sarah the operator , that was mentioned once I think ? Or another time she was Mr. Trendal's Mom, right? :D

Also Mr. Wheeler and His Daughter Darlene ! Weren't they the people who went along on the Douglas's picnic? Than there would be Mrs. Wheeler and the other people that were crowded in Oliver's car that day !

Not much to see, nowadays. The closure of the school, in 1966, gutted the community. There's a community center and a church, but that is it, for visitors. Donnan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnan,_Iowa), one county to the north, is a bit more scenic, what with the historical markers.

No. Never showed her but he sometimes spoke of a wife. But than other times it implied he was single, like the ep. where the pretty lady farmer came to Hooterville and all the men liked her and asked her to the dance including Mr. Haney ! :)

Oh , I guess we can add the lady farmer to the census ,I guess she stayed! ;)

I just saw the episode where Haney hit on Lisa's mom and asked her out. So if he was married it wasn't much of a marriage or an OPEN marriage!

I don't think they ever showed "Mrs.Haney" because who on earth would marry Mr.Haney??

Who takes care of the community center if there's fewer than 20 people left in town??

In 2005, Monti lost its church, which not only shut down the church, but also the parish hall. This left no public gathering space in the hamlet. So, 40 families (which included people who lived on farms outside of town, as well as in neighboring communities, some of whom lived there when there were more people there) bought the closed parish hall; it became the Monti Community Center, which is community-owned and community-run.

Ever since then, the center has been maintained and operated by a small group of a half a dozen people who live in and around the community. Throughout the year, meetings and events are held at the center, including the annual picnic and mass (the church is opened for the event), harvest festivals (Apple Gallop, Fall Festival), 4H events, weddings, funerals, etc. They used to even keep official meeting minutes (http://www.monticc.com/members.html), but after a few years, they stopped. There definitely is still a sense of community.

When I was a kid, and lived there, you would have to go to the T-intersection (there's only one) to get picked up by the bus, which would take you to Quasqueton. Nowadays, the school is in Winthrop. During those years, there were 6-8 kids.

The last time Mr. Haney mentioned his wife was near the end of season 4. The episode where Lisa's mom visited was the start of season 5 and Haney explicitly states he is a bachelor, leaving us to believe they divorced.

After season 4 he never mentioned his wife again, so there is some internal consistency in this case.

There's NO way a town with 28 or 48 PEOPLE would have enough kids for their own high school!! Even if you added Pixley and Crabwell Corners. That's still only around a couple hundred people.

Strangely enough Crabwell Corners was mentioned in Mayberry R.F.D as one of the towns near Mayberry. If it's the same place (and keep in mind Hooterville's location is never explicitly stated) then it could be the kids of Walnut Oaks, Triplett and Centreville (neighboring towns to Crabwell Corners in Mayberry R.F.D) go to Hooterville for school given how far away from Mayberry they are. Would also explain why whenever there's a train whistle in the B&W TAGS episode it sounds like the Cannonball.

Did anyone mention Charley Pratt, Floyd Smoot, and/or Wendell Gibbs?

Weren't wives mentioned for Ben Miller and Newt Kiley in the episode about seed planting choices? And the Bradley girls had various local boyfriends (one who worked in Sam's store early on). Oriin Pike recurred in later seasons.

If Green Acres is connected to Mayberry then maybe Sarah the telephone operator on both series is in fact the same person 🤔

Would make sense given Hank Kimball was seen in Mayberry moonlighting as a Kitchenware Salesman in 1966 (I guess he gave it up because he didn't like feeding random people's babies)
