View Full Version : Was Dick York in love with Elizabeth Montgomery in real life?
Monliz 11-03-2019, 10:36 AM In 2012 it was released a Tell al book about Elizabeth Montgomery's life, and it reveled that Dick York was in love with Lizz and it became very uncomfortable for her, it also says that Dick York being in love with her is the reason why Lizz disliked him.
Do you think this is true? if so, what do you think about it?
Mr. Television 11-03-2019, 11:51 AM First time I ever heard of it.
thejasoomian 11-03-2019, 11:54 AM Never heard of this either. What is the name of the book and who wrote it ?

thejasoomian 11-03-2019, 04:24 PM I guess I missed this book . Thanks for the link. It came out in 2012, written by Herbie J. Pilato. Who has written other Bewitched books. I have the Bionic Book that he wrote. So I'm sure he did his research. He wrote some books on Kung Fu the series and Mary Tyler Moore. Chris Mann did a great job on the Three's Company book he wrote. The only book on a TV series that I was disappointed in was the one Judith A. Moose wrote for Remington Steele. Anyways I may try and find this book and read it.
Larry Tate 11-04-2019, 10:40 AM William Froug a longtime ABC executive was also the Producer of Bewitched in season three.
It was he in his autobiography "How I escaped from Gilligan's Island :
and other misadventures of a Hollywood writer-producer" wrote of York mooning at Liz on the set, that he was in love with her and of Liz's clear and obvious discomfort and irritation at his behavior.e
And yes i think it is true.

MichaelKeith 11-05-2019, 03:40 PM True or not, I'm just glad that Dick York was on the show for as long as he was. No matter what went on behind the scenes, in front of the cameras, he and Montgomery had great chemistry. One of my favorite episodes is I believe from the fourth season titled "If They Never Met". This truly shows their great chemistry. Also the episode with Charlie and Daphne and the fur coat. Another great example of the chemistry between these two stars.
Schmoopie 11-07-2019, 02:10 AM That's sweet and it sounds interesting. I can't find the name of the book, though. I'd love to read it at some point.

I      that episode!
Schmo 11-09-2019, 04:22 PM Elizabeth Montgomery was married several times, so she made poor choices in her husbands, was hard to live with, or both.

Dick York is a cretin then, I mean, there's nothing wrong with being in love with Lizz, but if he made her feel uncomfortable with his behavior, that makes me think badly about DY as human being.
Monliz 11-23-2019, 09:29 AM This is exactly what Herbie Pilato says about York and Lizz:
"Dick York was madly in love with Lizz, and whenever York was forced to rest between filming, due to his severe back ailment he would glance over to Lizz "longingly"
"It was pretty clear that he was very smitten, and it was equally clear that Lizz couldn't stand him because of that."
It's shocking, maybe that's why whenever she's asked about Bewitched success, she used to say that it was because of the great cast, then she mentions the actors and actress of the series but never mentions DY.
DY must have bothered her a lot, what a moron
PracTz 11-23-2019, 10:34 AM If the claim of Mr. York mooning Miss Montgomery is true, then I would agree that it was a rather juvenile and unimaginative way of behaving on his part.
However; regardless of how he may have been attracted to her (and he was hardly the only mortal who was bewitched by her in that regard), the fact remains that he had been married to his wife Joan Alt for 12 years before the show started and would stay married to her for the 23 years after his time on the show ended until his death- and the two had no other spouses besides each other despite Mrs. York surviving him two decades! Hence, I don't think it was more than a vague flirtation on his part that he had no intention of pursuing any further.

So DY was a moron because he was smitten with Liz? Using this type of logic, it can also be said that Liz was a bitch because she despised DY for being infatuated with her. Aww, poor Liz. Her co-star was enamored with her. How terrible.
Her cold response to DY's infatuation makes me suspect that Liz was a shrew in real life and difficult to get along with. It wouldn't surprise me if this is true.
Larry Tate 11-23-2019, 01:14 PM Your a vile creature, DY sexually harassed Liz in the workplace and you blame her with ugly accusations for not putting up with it and being a faithful wife who was understandably repulsed by Yorks disgusting antics.
Being enamored with or even in love with someone is one thing, to be demonstrably so in front of co-workers when such advances are not welcome is unacceptable and grounds for dismissal, this may have contributed to Yorks's being fired from Bewitched after his collapse.
Yes York was a Moron, not for being in love with Liz but for the way he treated her, and by the way so are you.

York wasn't a moron for being in love with Lizz, he was a moron for making her feel uncomfortable to the point that she had to complain to Asher about York's behavior

Can you be more specific about York's behavior? What exactly did he do on the set of Bewitched that made Liz uncomfortable? The two of them were co-stars in the series for five seasons, so it seems to me whatever DY might have done wasn't that bad unless Liz didn't want to make a big issue of it.
If York had remained healthy and his back not given out during the 5th season, I imagine he would have continued in the role of Darrin and no need to bring in Dick Sargent.
For the record, I like the Sargent seasons, Sargent's portrayal of Darrin is a little different to how York played it but Sargent filled the role well.
Larry Tate 11-24-2019, 03:04 AM My you are an argument for birth control aren't you!
Look York was a peeping creep on the set, Liz wanted him gone after season three, Asher said no as he was thought too good in the role of Darrin to be fired , those are the facts Jack, deal with them, throwing ugly shade Liz's way doesn't change any of them one iota.

Everyone who's worked with Lizz have only said good things about her, everyone describes her as a humble person and down the earth, and obviously I take the statement of people who worked with here over your silly statements. :)

So Asher allegedly put the show ahead of his wife's feelings and supposed safety? If EM wanted DY gone after season 3 because she was uncomfortable by his alleged infatuation with her, was anything done on set to make Elizabeth feel more comfortable around the alleged "peeping creep?"
And DY just got worse and worse in the role, probably because of the pain he was suffering and his addiction.

Larry Tate 11-24-2019, 12:12 PM While a brilliant writer, producer and director Asher was also a serial adulter and all around creep who in effect had a second wife the last 4 or 5 years of his marriage to Liz.
No surprise then that he would choose the well being of the show over her feelings.
She avoided York as much as she could spending time in her dressing room or with other crew and cast to avoid interacting with York who was often immobile due to his having to stand up against a standing board to help him deal with his back problems.
Yes i think your right about his getting worse because of his physical and medication induced illness.

Since you have this sick fixation with Elizabeth Montgomery, you will continue defending her while being blind to everything else. This is what I tend to suspect, that she was hard to live with. Probably not always the nicest person to be around, bitchy at times, sometimes difficult to get along with/live with.
Alan Brady's Hair 11-25-2019, 12:11 PM The characters we see on the screen are just characters. But the actors, too, are just characters, images presented for public consumption, to attract public interest, or to distract from interest in certain subjects. The images are all maintained by the actors (or athletes or whatever), studios, publicists, and supposedly independent media that would shrivel up if it didn't have these characters to talk about.
We have the shows, to like or dislike. The rest is all a charade.
1960'sTVfan 11-25-2019, 12:25 PM Elizabeth Montgomery wasn't even that attractive a woman, slightly above average looks at best and that's being generous. When watching episodes of Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie, Barbara Eden is far more attractive compared to Elizabeth Montgomery. Comparing the two in culinary terms, Barbara Eden is a main course while Elizabeth Montgomery is a dog's breakfast.
