"It felt like something that actually could be a musical in these days of ‘let’s make it as a musical,'" explains showrunner and Gilmore Girls fan Kerry Ehrin. "But it also just brushed up against satire but not so much that it took you out of the reality."

The Gilmore Girls creator admits she hasn't seen the premiere episode that features a Gilmore Girls: The Musical subplot (https://www.primetimer.com/item/Why-does-The-Morning-Shows-premiere-episode-reference-a-Gilmore-Girls-musical-2JSPQ8). “(I'm) not going to see it,” she tells TVLine, adding that it "doesn’t smell good. It smells really bad, so we’re going to stay far away from that until we get a really good therapist.” The Morning Show boss Kerry Ehrin previously said she created the subplot because she and her daughter are big fans of Gilmore Girls.

Referencing a Gilmore Girls musical makes sense to me. The Netflix revival features a Stars Hollow musical in a lot of the summer episode #3.
