The 1980s were so different. You could have a TV parent who believed in spanking and was still portrayed as a good parent. Mr. Drummond was a great dad, loving and supportive. But, he could sure lay down the law when needed. I miss those kinds of dads on TV, and in real life too for that matter. I don't remember if he ever actually spanked Willis or Arnold or not. An entire episode was devoted to Arnold getting spanked for tossing water balloons out the window, but then Willis actually does the spanking. We know that Mr. Drummond definitely spanked Kimberly when she was little, at least once anyway. She told of the time when she buried him in the sand at the beach, up to his neck, and then left him there. She got spanked for that.

Studies since the 1980s have shown that spanking kids doesn't help them. I'm not at all surprised that the media depiction of spanking has changed over the years. You can lay down the law without using physical violence.

Mr. Drummond was doing what most parent did in the 1980s, but spanking kids is about as helpful as declawing your cat.

spanking kids is about as helpful as declawing your cat.

But declawing your cat gets rid of the possibility of claw marks on anything, so that is helpful if a pet owner wants to protect furniture or themselves.
