Blu Ray over DVD, if anything for durability alone, Blu's are far more scratch resistant than DVDs. But also for quality. More information can be stored on Blu's so now longer films, like the extended versions of the Lord Of The Rings films which took 2 discs per films, only takes one disc per film.
The great thing about both DVD and Blu's is we're getting older films that were never released on VHS finally getting home media releases. Garagehouse Pictures is one of the companies that is releasing some of these films, including films that were considered lost- The Intruder (1975) and The Dismembered (1962)
Also Warren Oates debut film Private Property (1962), is another never released on VHS that now is now available on Blu Ray.
We're also now getting proper releases on DVD and Blu that were screwed up on VHS, for instance Humongous on VHS was almost unwatchable, as the color timing was messed up so all of the night/dark scenes were pitch black, but thanks to modern tech this was corrected for DVD/Blu and you can see the film as it was meant to be seen.

I have no plans to invest in blu-ray, VHS and DVD work fine for me. Both formats have their advantages and disadvantages, but overall I'm satisfied.

I buy Blu Rays for newer movies and DVDs for the older movies.
