Tony Shalhoub is celebrating his 66th today. Shalhoub was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin to a Lebanese immigrant family. He earned a master’s in drama from Yale, and spent several years with the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts. He made his Broadway debut in 1986 in a revival of The Odd Couple. He then appeared on Broadway in The Heidi Chronicles (where he met Brooke Adams–the two have been married for over 25 years) and Conversations with My Father, which brought him his first Tony nomination.
Shalhoub began working regularly in film and television in the early 1990s. He was a regular on six seasons of NBC’s Wings, and then on the short lived sitcom Stark Raving Mad. He also became a busy character actor in film, appearing in Barton Fink, Men in Black, A Civil Action, The Siege, and the Spy Kids films, to name just a few.
In 2002, Shalhoub began starring on a USA Network mystery series about a police detective/consultant who has OCD and a variety of phobias. As Adrian Monk on Monk, he was nominated for eight consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, winning three times.

In the last decade, Shalhoub has begun working regularly on stage again. He was a Tony nominee for a revival of Clifford Odets’s Golden Boy, and for the original production of James Lapine’s Act One. Last year he won his first Tony, for Best Actor in a Musical, for starring in The Band’s Visit. He has also been a regular on the first two seasons of Amazon Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He recently won his fourth Emmy for the show’s second season.
