View Full Version : Ads being placed in between paragraphs on most all threads
Zoneboy 10-04-2019, 10:12 PM I hate to gripe and I'm very aware of the importance of ads but this is ridiculous. Practically every thread I've viewed lately has one or more ads in between the paragraphs depending on the length of the post. For example, The Diahann Carroll thread I posted earlier today has 4 of the same ad. I don't know when this started, but I don't care for it at all.
We've been running the Google auto ads for a few months, but those must be a new ad format in recent days. One per page would not be so bad, but I can understand how multiple ads per page could be annoying. There's no way to limit the amount since they automatically insert them where they think is best. The in-page ads have been turned off, so they shouldn't be appearing.

Dude111 10-18-2019, 11:00 PM I dont know why staff has to be bombarded with ads!!!!
TJ cant you make it so staff doesnt see any buddy???
Heenan Fan 10-26-2019, 09:24 PM No big deal to me. Ya gotta pay the bills.
MrCleveland 10-28-2019, 04:39 PM I use adblocker...but some places say "we insist you turn-off your adblocker"...some places force this policy!
What I hate about ads is...they slow-down your internet!
Dude111 10-31-2019, 07:08 PM Yes and why bother having them if the person isnt gonna click them anyway??
Like you said it just bogs stuff down FOR NO REASON!!
I dunno.........
stevea 11-03-2019, 07:04 AM On the Mac you can go into safari>preferences>privacy, and see all the tracking sites that plant cache on your computer. These are from sites you don't even visit. Thus, the ads. But this junk definitely slows down the computer.
The only thing I know of to do, is make sure you clear history on a daily basis.
Has anyone noticed the ads have dropped down farther on the page? It wasn't doing this on Wednesday but it is today. I'm using Google Chrome if that makes any difference. I don't mind that there are ads but this is kind of annoying.
Example: This Car Battery Ad is dropping down farther on the page.

I've been getting those ads as well.
Thanks to everybody who isn't blocking ads or who have whitelisted us. It helps pay for the server costs, although it's been more of a struggle the last few years.
I'm on a PC and haven't seen any ads overlapping like that. It looks like you are on some kind of tablet or mobile device due to the reduced width. There would be a row of 5 DVDs on a PC at full resolution.
I guess the Google AI still has a lot to learn when it comes to the placement and amount of ads they show. I'll try and report the issue to them. They should never cover any navigation areas. There really shouldn't be more than 3 ads per page. One rectangle below the blue navigation bar, one leaderboard below the news/DVDs box and one in the footer at the bottom of the page.

Can you please take a screenshot if you are still seeing them that way? I thought you were using an ad blocker. I noticed you haven't even been as active posting or even logging in as much recently. I'm glad your phone issues are fixed. I thought maybe you were just taking a break to post on other forums. They have a lot of ads on those Primetimer forums, don't they? Anyway, welcome back - it's good to see you back posting again after your hiatus. :)
Don't you have a backup PC or other device you can use besides your phone? I'm not sure how people can even see anything or type on those smartphones. I could never type without an actual keyboard.

I'm not certain but I think you can close that type of ad by pressing the upward facing arrow ^.
Dude111 02-07-2020, 05:23 PM Thanks to everybody who isn't blocking ads or who have whitelisted us. It helps pay for the server costs...Can I ask ya something buddy?? (Im not trying to make ya mad)
How does it help pay server costs if people do not click them anyway??
All it does is bog down thier page... (I mean they arent gonna react to them so why bother having them??)
I dont understand I guess.........
The ads are back to normal now for me. It was like that for a couple of days but now it seems to be fixed. There are no more ad drop downs blocking the top of the page. Thanks for looking into it.

Please let me explain that to you buddy. I know you are using an older browser which blocks ads either automatically or by your personal choice.
Most ads pay just if they are viewed. Some only pay if they are clicked. That's true. I would say it's more that are just viewed.
When people fast forward or skip commercials, those advertisers still pay a set amount. Online advertisers do not pay when their ads are blocked and do not display.
Our webserver costs $199 a month. What do you think pays for that? The advertising. It's almost to the point where I might have to ask for donations to keep things running. It's hard to do when people block ads and there's already declining traffic and activity.
Did you see that TV by the Numbers recently shut down due to a change in online publishing? What do you think was the cause of that? It's because people are blocking ads. I've seen some estimates that 25% of people are blocking ads. It's probably much higher than that like 40-50% by now. So many sites are shutting down because they can't pay their expenses. Why do you think so many newspaper sites block people who are using ad blockers?
How do the many other forums you visit pay their hosting costs? Do they accept donations?
Dude111 02-08-2020, 12:59 AM Thank you buddy, maybe you should get some pay per click ads, then we can all click them and help ya :)
