View Full Version : Least Favorite Multi-Episode Storyline?

Over the course of the show's nine year run, the series had a number of episodes where the following episode would essentially pick up where the last episode left off. For the most part, I liked it when the series took an on-going story approach, but the exception for me has to be the episodes where Shorty Kellems shows up in Beverly Hills and just will NOT go away.

I'm at the point now where I just skip a big chunk of season eight because my gosh is the character annoying and the writers ran his woman-chasing antics into the ground over and over again for MULTIPLE episodes. Probably the worst and least funny is the one involving the slave auction at the bank. Not my style of humor and just plain terrible, in my opinion.

I really wish Jed would've let Granny run Shorty off back to the hills like she wanted to with her double barrel shotgun early on.

As soon as I saw the question listed I immediately thought of SHORTY! I can't stand that sickening guy. And like you said, he NEVER goes away and then finally after 200 episodes with the guy he finally does go away, 2 or 3 episodes later he's BACK!!! And once again he's back forever again! Apparently somebody behind the scenes must have thought that obnoxious character was amusing, I can't stand him.

I can only guess at that point the writing staff was scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas so they kept Shorty around as long as possible... that or they legitimately thought the character and the stories were solidly good and funny, but eh... I sure as heck didn't. Everything about the character just bugs me though (he's not nearly as grating on the nerves in the episodes set in Silver Dollar City).

The frogman episodes aren't quite as hard to get through for me, but I think it helps that it was a shorter stretch (if I recall correctly) of episodes, so that definitely helped.

The frogman episode came to mind when I read the subject line. Miss Jane going to watch the grunion run also got old.

The episodes where they went to New York and Washington were far fetched for me. Jed thinking he could buy Central Park and places in Washington made Jed be a lot dumber than he was. They seemed to last forever also.

Seems like all of the multi-part episodes were lousy. The worst of them the endless Shorty episodes, almost unwatchable due to Shorty himself. True torture. The DC & NY shows I found allright but they did go on too long and agree that Jed turned into a moron there. The Frogman episodes also went on way too long and those then turned Granny into a total moron. Guess they took turns being morons in the multi-part shows.

Frogman, Shorty, Silver Dollar City, Phil Silvers in Washington, Jane and Ellie's apartment (with Mike Minor), War of the Roses. Mainly those in the last three or so seasons.

The episodes with the obnoxious sociology student, Ginny Jennings, who thinks that Jed and the family are working as Drysdale's servants and living in the cabin. Thankfully, she only lasted 3 episodes.

Also, the episodes with beatnik Sheldon and his hippy friends were boring.

As I said in another thread, I can't stand the Lafe Crick character. Granny and I have that in common, apparently.

The frogman episodes messed with me lol , Like Granny, I also have a fear of water, so I can imagine what I'd think if I thought everyone was becoming water creatures lol In fact it inspired me to write a story based on this concept

I hated the dumbing down of the characters, Jed should have been portrayed a country but wise.

I'm glad you said this, because I really like Phil Silvers, and I've been feeling a little guilty for not enjoying his episodes on The Beverly Hillbillies. It's annoying because he rips them off, then feels guilty and returns the money, then rips them off again, feels guilty and returns the money, then rips them off again. Enough already.

I've been watching all the episodes from the very first one on MeTV. I'm glad I read this thread because I was forwarned about the Shorty Kellum arc dragging on, so I was able to prepare myself.

I think generally, overall the quality dips on the show by the beginning of season eight. They seem to depend more on guest stars and they seem to have a different feel.
