View Full Version : A Very Brady Renovation has found unusually surreal ways to revisit the past
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/03/arts/television/a-very-brady-renovation-bh90210.html
HGTV's Brady Bunch home makeover show "feels like the logical progression of, and the perfect metaphor for, the reboot and revival craze that has brought us Fuller House and Twin Peaks: The Return, that exhumed Veronica Mars and Murphy Brown," says James Poniewozik. "The vast mechanism of TV and streaming has become a Star Trek replicator of pop culture. If I want to see Jean-Luc Picard on my TV again: Make it so! The Brady Bunch is the perfect show to reboot this way, because it has made a posthumous art of reproducing itself. Long before Friends liberated $100 million from Netflix’s pockets, it was the Patient Zero of TV nostalgia, extending its five-season life through reruns, spinoffs, TV movies, theatrical movies, cartoons, a variety show, memes ('Sure, Jan') and not a few tell-alls and documentaries. Its memory surpassed its actual existence. And memory is what HGTV is selling here — well, memory and its own brand." Poniewozik, meanwhile, says BH90210 "is determined not to be just another reboot. So instead it attempts to be just about everything else. It is arch comedy; it is sentimental nostalgia; it is satirical; it is sincere; it is Hollywood story and middle-age story and sexcapade and horror story. It is, above all, a commentary on, and example of, the strangeness and sadness of trying to force the past back to life."

There was at least Darrin and Samantha, and Robbie and Katie on My Three Sons, in 1967. Darrin and Samantha would have been 1964.

I caught that when Maureen said it. The first couple to sleep in the same bed was Mary Kay and Johnny in 1947. There was plenty more before 1969.
It surprises me that some of the Brady kids had not seen the house prior to this show or much later after the show ended. You’d think they’d be curious to see it especially since many of them had lived in LA for quite some time.
stevea 09-09-2019, 10:54 PM We saw a lot of Chris, Maureen, Mike, and Susan. Especially Chris and Maureen. Virtually nothing of Eve and Barry.
They did a great job replicating the living room/dining area, and finding/replicating furnishings and knick knacks. I wondered why they didn't stick a rotary dial landline phone in there. I'm sure they could have found one on Ebay.
Bonniegirl 09-10-2019, 12:53 AM I 'm watching it now. Really fun and interesting !!:)

I'm thinking Barry, Eve and Mike will be featured a lot in the next ep. And the three tonight not so much! ;)
How many episodes will this run , does anyone know? ;)

Am sure I read that there were 4. I hope someone here in Great Britain screens it or my contact from the underworld can download it for me somewhere. Or better still, a dvd release.

A Very Brady Renovation makes HGTV history with its best-ever premiere (https://deadline.com/2019/09/a-very-brady-renovation-tv-ratings-season-premiere-hgtv-1202730840/)
About 3.36 million (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/a-very-brady-renovation-scores-huge-ratings-hgtv-1238756) watched Monday's premiere of the four-part Brady Bunch home reality renovation series, the highest-rated premiere for an HGTV series. Monday's viewership surpassed Fixer Upper's April 2018 series finale, which attracted 3.27 million viewers. A Very Brady Renovation also delivered HGTV's biggest audience in 2 1/2 years. “We knew A Very Brady Renovation would exceed every expectation,” says HGTV president Jane Latman. “This initial ratings and digital performance report has been nothing short of impressive and our entire team is celebrating. The Brady Bunch is a pop culture phenomenon with incredible appeal, so we expect viewers to return week after week to watch how HGTV renovated and replicated the real Brady Bunch house.”

Wow! A few niggles aside which are to come later such as repositioning of the rooms, this was very enjoyable and the reveal of the living room was fantastic. Other than the fourth wall which was a bit off it feels like they got it about 95% right! I can't wait to see the bedrooms, the kitchen and family room as well as Gregs groovy attic.

I always thought Herman and Lily Munster were the first couple shown in bed together.
Bachu 09-17-2019, 05:30 PM A Very Brady Renovation A02 Here's the Second Story
Slightly off from being wow this week. Other than the liberty taken with the fourth wall in Mike's den, Mike's was pretty much spot on. The entry arch was a bit too marrow though.
In both the boys and girls bedrooms the windows were way too high which made me wonder whether that was some modern safety thing. The bunk bed also seemed a tad too big but other than that, they did quite well at hitting the nail on the head. Too many liberties were taken with the girls room though. The closet was too far from the door and the fourth wall, well, that changed depending on who was directing. I'd give them about 9 out of 10 for the final result this week.
It is a shame the upstairs hall was wider than it should be and that they were not able to have the upstairs layout match the set. I guess in reality if they had the bedrooms would have been right on the boundry line looking into the neighbours yard.
The Jack and Jill bedroom looked and felt quite good but every Brady fan knows, the Bradys never went to the 'bathroom.' ;)
Ronny G 09-17-2019, 07:07 PM I took these screen grabs from the aftershow so we can really pause and analyze them side by side to compare and really nick pick. But in all fairness, HGTV did a great job with what they had to work with.
The Den: The doorway in the original was a lot wider. I guess they had to make it more smaller in order to fit in the room.
Ronny G 09-17-2019, 07:16 PM Here is the boy's room. The ladder on the bunk bed looks thicker and wider than the one in the original.
Ronny G 09-17-2019, 07:19 PM Here is the girl's room. The dresser is wider and the mirror is bigger. There is no closet next to the door.
stevea 09-17-2019, 08:42 PM I didn't think they quite nailed the girls' wallpaper but came pretty close. They could take some liberties with the other end of the den since they never did a reverse angle shot. Therefore nothing was ever constructed for that wall on set.
If the Brady kids went to the the bathroom that family would've been in a world of hurt. Six of them sharing one bathroom? Somebody would have been parading through the master br. all the time.
Bachu 09-18-2019, 01:14 PM Thanks for the screen grabs.
Mike's den - I wonder if they couldn't make the room wider because of that bit on the side of the house meaning you would compromise the walls and the view from the street? Other than the entrace arch being too narrow, the den looks great.
A clip of the girls room form the Libby episode reminded me that the wall paper was added over time to the girls room. At some points some walls were papered while others were pink. Perhaps the HGTV versionlooks odd because the colours really pop out at you. It was a room with the biggest compromises though. The door to the bedroom was too far away from the closet.
I guess a lot of decisions they made were due to the rooms being over the kitchen and family room and they wanted that to be a flat wall.
What I have seen of the garden and that side of the house suggests too big a compromise. On the set, whatever was supposed to be over the kitchen had a real overhang.
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ba/f0/97/baf0976fc986c7c0e138bc4739f5a25c.png
The boys room is quite good though the bunk beds reach out too close to the door. Also, they seem bulkier. And finally, the boys bedroom furniture seemed real easy to make but they got quite a bit wrong. However, I was impressed that like me, they spotted the mistake with the movie version headboard behind Gregs bed and corrected it.
These many niggles aside...I love it. I would love to run around that house and pose on those stairs. :D
Bonniegirl 09-18-2019, 01:27 PM The show is really neat, very enjoyable !:) I'm so glad HGTV is doing this project.;) It's great seeing the kids as middle aged adults now, besides the cool recreation of the house.
One of the best moments I thought was when Susan and Mike met with Hope Schwartz , and she presented Susan with Kitty Carryall !!:) That was touching Cindy being reunited with Kitty!!

I agree. I'm really enjoying the show as well. Believe it or not, Barry will be 65 on September 30, so he is past the middle aged stage. He's now considered a senior citizen! And the others aren't too far behind! But I know what you mean. I still think of them as the kids, so its kind of a reality check seeing Barry with white hair!
stevea 09-18-2019, 08:47 PM Maureen turned 63 in August, so she's pretty close to being a senior citizen. She really does look great for her age, by the way.

It means annoyance, or nitpick. It has nothing to do with the racial slur.

I absolutely loved this project, and wish this had been done with many other Classic TV facades. I hope HGTV makes good use of the house now.

There's no justification for any jumping to such conclusions in this day and age. It's not like you have to go haul a dictionary off the bookshelf anymore. A definition can be found for any word by just highlighting it, right-clicking on it and selecting search. Takes a couple of seconds. To do otherwise is to be as bad as that New York English teacher who mistakenly thought Shakespeare's use of "n-i-g-g-a-r-d" had racist connotations. Which, by the way, is as bad as this forum software, which censored it and forced me to space out the letters of a perfectly valid word.
In the immortal words of the late, great Felix Unger, "You should never assume. Because when you assume, you make an @ss of you and me!"
Bachu 09-19-2019, 01:07 PM You know what would be great, if they got the Brady Kids, the Brady Movie cast, the cast from Growing Up Brady and Whitehouse, the Bradys from The X Files episode as well as fake Jan, fake Marcia and fake Cindy all to pose on the stairs. In fact a photo off the real Brady girls and the fake Brady girls would be a hoot!

Bachu 09-20-2019, 03:23 PM The other night I freeze framed some of the next time clips. It looks like they have left the original garage that is on the property as it which is a great shame and explains why the garden looks, quite frankly, not much like the TV show garden at all. I do not recall the garage ever really being visible on the establishing shots such as the one below so I do not see why they could not have knocked it it down and given us a proper Brady garage. Hopefully they will explain why when we get to the garden part of the show.

stevea 09-23-2019, 09:45 PM Did I just hear that designer call Alice "Ann B. Taylor?"
Somebody tell me I'm hearing things!
Also does anyone know if they're going to do Mike and Carol's room? I'd think they would have done that instead of Alice's room. With that huge addition they had to have room for it.

I believe Mike and Carol's room will be shown on next weeks episode. Quite honestly, I am simply blown away by this remodel. It would be like a dream come true to actually be able to take a tour of this place. If they can get some variances from the neighbors, city, etc, they could make a fortune with tours. Not sure that will happen but put the Brady Bunch house tour on my to do bucket list. Just get the chills thinking of actually seeing that place. Just amazing. The only little letdown was the back yard and too bad the addition was so large that it took up so much yard space.
stevea 09-24-2019, 03:05 PM Yeah, it is too bad about the back yard. I also thought I saw a minor difference at the den entrance, when watching the repeat of last week's episode.
Yeah, I'd really like to see this too. My thought is it'd be so cool to actually live in it.
Another interesting thing they could do in the future would be to pick some other iconic house and actually build it someplace, with its TV floor plan. If they built it, they could choose a big enough lot, and they could make sure everything was built right for the interior.

stevea.Living in it would be the ultimate for me. Could you imagine living in all that groovyness ? I would be scared of breaking some of those almost impossible to replace appliances, furniture, etc. There were some minor things that looked off.One was the plaid pattern of the covers of those bed couches in the family room. Just seemed a little off. Also one of the tables in the family room seemed different. The boys bedroom was amazing.Everything was actually, but that room stood out the most to me along with the family room which was my favorite room in the house. I wonder if HGTV puts that house on the market, just how much they could get for it now ? Oh,if I could only hit the multi million dollar lottery.......
Bonniegirl 09-24-2019, 08:40 PM Did anyone else get a tear in their eye when Eve placed that "Love"pillow that Ann had made for her years ago on Alice's bed? That was so sweet and sentimental :) !! I was so glad Eve got to take part in Alice's room renovation, Jan and Alice having the middle Sister bond !!!;):)
stevea 09-24-2019, 09:49 PM Yeah, that was real nice. And it was in quite a collection in her friend's garage.
Wouldn't it have been cool if they'd found the locket and put it with the pillow?

Considering where Alices room is on the plan above it is a shame they didn't put it where it should be at the back of the kitchen as there is clearly space. Katchoo was the episod that showed how the utility room connected to the kitchen and then a later episode showed the correct view from Alices bedroom door of the utility room. And then every later episode used a simpler flat wall to suggest the utility room because it was quicker. The same way a lot of season 5 episodes showed a reverse view of the boys room from the point of view of the bunkbed when clearly they had just put the bunk beds where 'Gregs' bed would be and Gregs bed where the bunk beds would be.
Ronny G 09-25-2019, 04:45 PM There were some minor things that looked off.One was the plaid pattern of the covers of those bed couches in the family room. Just seemed a little off. :
I noticed that, too! The original looked more like a tweed, or a similar rough-surfaced woolen cloth fabric.
The remake looked liked a soft quilt, and was brighter.

GROOVY! The show must be doing well for the network to add all these spin offs. Now if only we could get a HD version release of the show.

Merry24 09-30-2019, 10:30 PM Thank you to HGTV & The Brady Bunch cast for doing this show! They did a OUTSTANDING job!
I feel this is the most RESPECTED cast in Television! A lot of celebrities don’t want to remember there roots. These 6 individuals
(Barry & Maureen & Chris & Eve & Mike & Susan)! I Thank so much for giving your time and your hard work!
A couple questions for posters is Jerry Houser who played Wally Logan (Marcia’s Husband) & Ron Kuhlman (Jan’s Husband) who played Philip Covingtion from The Brady Brides & A Very Brady Christmas & The Brady’s., Are they going to be on A Very Brady Renovation?, cause when they showed the audience before the ribbon cutting in episode 4 I thought I saw Jerry Houser (Wally Logan, Marcia’s Husband). In addition it looked like both actors will be on episode 5 (The Bloopers Episode)?
Lastly, Will The Brady’s be Returnning December 2019 on HGTV as they decorate the house for Christmas? What’s that about hmmm?? I saw a promo saying Catch The Brady’s this Holiday Season and it shows them Decorating The Brady House for Christmas.
stevea 09-30-2019, 10:35 PM ^Echo that! Great cast!
I think we're gonna see a lot more of the Bradys on HGTV, judging by the ratings. They already have an outtakes show next week.

The finale episode shows us Mike and Carols bedroom as well as Gregs attic bedroom from season 5. The bedroom is great though they sadly did not show us the ensuite bathroom, what was behind the headboard or the fourth wall with the seldom seen patio(?) window.
Gregs attic was good though sadly they couldn't fake the staircase.
This has been a wonderful show. Perhaps next they could do the Bewitched house.
Next week some new shows air in the form of A Very Brady Renovation: Behind the Build that will air October 7th and 14th.
And 'On Oct. 7, HGTV also is launching an eight-episode digital series, “Just Ask Brady,” with the actors who played the six Brady kids answering “answering America’s burning questions and (providing) inside scoop” on “Renovation.”'

Something I would like to have seen was the utility room; a shot taking us through the doorless doorway behind the stairs and where it led; a shot taking us through the kitchen door to the utility room or rather where that now leads.
I look forward to see the 'husbands' on the upcoming shows. It would be great to see the Movie kids as well.
I would also love to see a coffee table book full of photos of this wonderful creation.

stevea 10-01-2019, 08:57 PM An interesting thing would be to see Jonathan Taylor Thomas come back for a reaction to the re-do (maybe even comparing it to the 1990 re-do), since he was in The Bradys when he was a tiny kid (billed as Jonathan Weiss).
He could also talk about how improbable it would be to move a house that size. If you take The Bradys at face value the house address would no longer be 4222 Clinton Way.

Bachu 10-03-2019, 04:07 PM https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mr-straws-house
In Great Britain we have something called the National Trust which looks after many old houses and buildings of historical importance. One such house is Mr Straws house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. It is a house on a normal street. The Trust bought the house next door. You can park in the orchard opposite and then in guided tours of numbers of 4 visitors you have a tour of the house with pre-booked timeslots. This way there is minimal distruption to the neighbours. I think they should do something like this with the Brady house.
IllinoisTVFan 10-03-2019, 04:56 PM This is really cool and I watched all the episodes. I have to say it's very good. There are things a bit off but I expected that because things often can't be 100% accurate. However, still fantastic. They should have asked Robbie Rist to come on the show, he's very active on social media (and fun fact he's a real life friend of one of my friends).
Ronny G 10-03-2019, 07:05 PM I live in Great Britain and I get this message... This site is not available in your country. :( But many thanks for linking them for me. Perhaps you can describe in detail what I cannot see. :D
Well that sucks! Hopefully you can see the pics I posted-- or are those being blocked, too? If not, I'll try to post more pics for you.

Mind, Brady World -Complete Guide to The Brady Bunch on Facebook posted some great photos about 7 hours ago of the inside of the house.
This article might be of interest to a Brady fan though it does seem to do nothing but attack the sweet intentions of the show.

Screwy Wabbit 10-05-2019, 11:22 AM The other night I freeze framed some of the next time clips.

The carport is right there on the left side of the picture. Pull into the driveway and turn right. You can't knock out that carport without making that angle look very different. As for the backyard, I think it looks different because the shape and size of the property lot is different. They just didn't have the space. Not even if they had bought the house next door and torn it down. The flood control channel behind it cuts off the lot diagonally. It would have been different if the lot was actually rectangular, but it's not.
I didn't like the fake window idea for Greg's attic, though. The edge lighting was very obvious. Should have installed a flat screen TV instead of a poster. Hook up a camera pointed at some trees outside and voila, a real world view that changes with time of day, seasons of the year and weather conditions.
Bachu 10-05-2019, 02:23 PM I mean the building to the bottom right of the first pic and right of the second. Surely that could have been taken down whatever it is???

Thanks for sharing this article, Bachu. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
According to the author, the house was designed by an obscure architect by the name of Londelius, and is an example of mid-century architecture, so it shouldn't be altered. By that logic, any house built in the 1950s should never be remodeled. The only reason people care about this particular house is that it is the Brady house, not because some architect no-one's ever heard of designed it.
I just watched one episode, and it's clear this project was a huge undertaking. The results are stunning.
Bachu 10-06-2019, 06:04 AM The author also states that no one wanted a wrecking ball taken to the house but that that is what happened. Well, not quite. The house was only ever shown from the front on the show. The actual rear of it is interesting to see but it is not the house we know and loved. The actual back of it is something we only ever saw of as the garden and patio doors and garage. We never really saw above the ground floor unless it was a rare closeup of the boys or girls bedrrom window.
HGTV retained the iconic image alive in our minds and at the front and restored that to what we remember (though the colour seems a little off to me) and created the inside as best they could given limitations of the height of the house and the adjacent properties. It wasn't really a renovation but more of a gutting and new build but regardless, in my eyes they have 'preserved' or rather created the house we saw on the show; they did not preserve the actual house used for the show and that is fine by me.
Ronny G 10-06-2019, 11:12 AM Suggestion for future uses of the house: They should do a reality show in the house like Big Brother or Survivor where all 6 Brady "kids" live in the house for a month while the cameras catch their every move., They have to vote out one sibling each week!!! Have them compete in competitions to see who can last the longest in the house or get evicted. The last Brady standing wins!! LOL

In the show they explained that, due to the addition, they didn't have room for doing the back yard right--it's just too small an area.
I think the attic was their most puzzling problem, enough so that they might have explained the problem and just skipped it. One big problem is that it's not an attic.
Another problem IMO--the stairs. They did explain that problem too--to me, it's unfortunate that is just not "enough" of a stairway.
Bachu 10-09-2019, 04:29 PM A Very Brady Renovation: Behind the Build 1 of 2 was another enjoyable hour in Brady land though the ending was pretty much the reveal of the living room in full so basically a repeat. We did get to see what Alices' bathroom may have looked like as well as seeing more the of cast reactions to the original house.
Regarding the staircase; if they had not have said that it was missing a stair I doubt I would have noticed. It looks right to me. Though the top of the door to the den doesn't.
Eve Plumb said she has all the scripts. We need her to post the tag scenes to the pilot and the other episode that is missing its tag on the dvds.
Coffeecup 10-09-2019, 04:51 PM I happened to bumped into the 4th episodes and wondered what was the point of rehabbing the place to look like the house that had a tv series. Not to be harsh but the company must have spent millions gutting and remodeling the house. What happens now that the house has a interior of the tv series. It is going to use for tours. Oh the neighbors would hate that. Or it be sold. What was the point?
Bachu 10-09-2019, 05:08 PM @coffeecup - I have no idea if you are a fan of the show or not but the show holds a special place in the heart of many people. The fact that the network never had as many viewers for a show as this one did should indicate that. For many fans the house was as much a part of the show as the stars and now a house that only existed within the confines of 117 episodes exists in real life. Think about it too much and it is strange and weird and crazy but hey, it's the 50th anniversary and the fact that it was done has brought big Sunshine Day smiles to many a fan. Watching the reveals of each room is like waking up on Christmas morning.
As I posted earlier, the could have tours with a small minibus turning up on the doorstep with fans walking into the house and touring it. No doubt they would be asked to be considerate of the neighbours.
On the one hand, almost everything in the house is fake but on the other, who cares? I don't. I'd love to visit it and run up and down those stairs and see where the door at the top of the stairs goes. Why build rollercoasters? It is because it is fun and people love them.
At the moment no one knows the future of the house. Lets just hope it doesn't go to rack and ruin.

Same here. We only care about the facade of this house because it's the facade that was used. Now the inside matches the studio set, and they could use it for all sorts of things.
Tours, of course, but I like Ronny's idea of having a reality show with the cast, one cast member being voted off every week. (Although I suspect Jan would get voted off first because she's the Jan of the group).
Schmoopie 10-10-2019, 02:05 AM I was kind of skeptical about this show at first and I thought it was going to be dumb so I wasn't going to watch it. But then out of curiosity I found it on On Demand and the first episode made me laugh so hard that I cried. I'm hooked!
Bachu 10-15-2019, 03:59 PM Behind the Build: We're Gonna Keep On, Keep On Showing You More - the final episode. For me too much was shown of the original reveal but we still got to see some neat stuff. This episode highlighted to me just how much they got almost right but for the most part it looks right.
I wasn't keen on the master bedroom bathroom being behind that screen but I suppose having the now real fake window shaped it. Having a window like that in the bathroom is odd though. Also, not enough of a reveal of the window where the fourth wall was which I always considered to be a patio door.
I would have loved to have seen where the door at the top of stairs went. Also, to see a tracking shot leading from the kitchen through the door to what was the utility room and coming out behind the staircase. I would also liked to have seem more footage of everyone enjoying the house.
Niggles aside, great stuff!
Bachu 02-16-2020, 05:10 PM I heard that HGTV showed the Renovation on New Years Day with some updated scenes> Did anyone see it? What was the new stuff?

Anyone?
RetroGuy2000 03-05-2020, 01:54 AM Anyone?
I did see the additional scenes.
They showed scenes of Alice's bathroom, planting the palm tree out front, building the wooden stand that the ceramic horse sits on, and setting out the ceramic horse.
Eve found the house's original wallpaper, hidden behind layers of wallpaper, stucco, and paneling, and since no-one knows what Alice's bathroom looked like, they framed two of the horse designs on the wallpaper, and framed them, as a tribute to the original house. Picture here (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcTqBMbyfUICTKygJDGfOVgm8aVEkFmNxXaS8_dak25yMcJJ4z4g) and here (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ENMd1mAXsAAAlqR.jpg).
The tree is the tree next to the front door in this image (https://hookedonhouses.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/The-Brady-Bunch-Movie-house-exterior-facade.jpg).

Cheers. I feel some of that was shown in the behind the build episodes. I heard the New Years Day episodes had a bit more.
I found this video the other day. Shame whoever filmed it didn't film it in landscape but still interesting to see such as; what is behind the sliding closet door in the master bedroom, the space behind the kitchen and where the door at the top of the stairs leads.

If I could I would self isolate in the Brady Bunch house.

Bachu 10-06-2020, 10:29 AM One of the things that bugged me the most about the renovation of the Attic Bedroom is that the space where the stairs should be looks silly. Thinking about it, the stairs to the new location of the parents room is now just above that area.
https://static.wixstatic.com/media/535f39_41a1b99a9ff94ec3a45f8a20fdc935cf~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_332,h_442,al_c,q_90,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/535f39_41a1b99a9ff94ec3a45f8a20fdc935cf~mv2.webp
What they could of done is had the space go down about 4 steps like it did on the show to a tiny landing and instead of turning left and left again to walk down imaginary stairs like they would have done on the show you could have turned left and left again to walk up 4 steps on the reverse of the wall to a door leading to Gregs room from the hallway that links both the parents room and Gregs.

You can see in this photo here the stair case leading to the parents room. Gregs room on Reno seemed quite long so I think they could have pushed it down a bit towards what was the fourth wall on the show to give them more space to make my idea happen. Perhaps they could do another Reno; A Very Brady Attic Staircase Renovation.
