MTV already had hits with animated cartoons such as Daria and had the pop culture classic game show Remote Control and the other game shows Lip Service and Singled Out but ever since the debut of their first reality show The Real World that showed that MTV was headed toward a new direction and so if it wasn't for The Real World we wouldn't have shows like My Super Sweet 16 Jersey Shore Teen Mom and other reality shows continue to exist on MTV. But back when MTV had music videos it opened a whole new way of listening to music and learning about the newest hit albums. And so with music videos from artists like Eddie Money Michael Jackson The Cars Rod Stewart Rick Springfield Elton John Paula Abdul Janet Jackson and Duran Duran MTV soon had a huge fan following but when hip hop and rap and R&B became huge in the 90's MTV had played music videos from rap and R&B artists like R. Kelly Mary J. Blige Usher Toni Braxton Naughty By Nature Warren G. and Boyz II Men MTV was still hugely popular but as I mentioned earlier once TRL was cancelled music videos had said bye bye to MTV and if you look at MTV today they should change their name to Movie Television because when you look at their schedule MTV constantly plays movies and it seems that the only movies that MTV is obsessed with are Tyler Perry movies like Madea's Family Reunion and they should cut down on movies and add more music programming like classic Soul Train reruns or have a Star Search like reality show and of course add a midnight morning and afternoon music video show and have a top 20 countdown show of the best top 20 music videos for the month and MTV would go back to it's music roots with this formula

Totally. It's now a garbage network that has NOTHING to do with music. Then again music these days is mostly garbage!

Can't even remotely compare to the 80s or even 90s.

It was a gradual thing. Moving to Times Square in 1997 was the real change, then videos slowly began to fade more and more into the background and by 2005-ish, videos were practically non-existent

Why the hell do they even call it MTV anymore??
