View Full Version : Is Marlo Thomas a billionaire?
Apparently, her father Danny Thomas was a billionaire and she inherited his estate when he died. How did he become so rich?
His former home (https://www.businessinsider.com/danny-thomas-mansion-in-beverly-hills-sells-for-65-million-2017-2) recently sold for $65 million, after being reduced from $135 million. He also built the St. Jude's Children Hospital, which Marlo is head doctor of. Marlo also made a lot of money from her That Girl series.

Since when is Marlo Thomas a doctor?
Heenan Fan 09-07-2019, 07:14 PM My guess would be St. Judes is a scam just like 90% of every other charity in the world is.
stevea 09-07-2019, 08:17 PM I don't know if St. Jude's is a scam but their ads sure are annoying. But the SPCA ads are even worse, and the individual ads go on FOREVER.
I don't think it's right that St. Jude's begs for money on TV yet they don't ask the parents of patients for one thin dime. Or so they say.
Hazel Anyday 09-07-2019, 09:25 PM She must be a billionaire to live in those huge apartments in N.Y. the way she does in between visits from Donald and Daddy;).
The only thing that makes me switch the channel faster than the parade of sick kids Marlo exploits are the parade of deformed armless and legless kids that that other shameless money grubbing outfit parades in front of the camera. Oh, those animals that would be better off put to sleep also is atrocious and is quickly switched off as soon as the first beaten beast looks at the camera in close-up. Anybody got a gun, those animals need to be shot not filmed.
These shameless attempts to make us open our wallets while crying thru our tears are absolutely sickening. Do they realize how offensive they are and how accomplishing the exact opposite of what they want that they're doing? Guess not the parade of profanities never stops.
Whatever happened to ads for Jello or Comet cleanser or freeze pops? Don't people buy that anymore or do they all think we can't wait to shell out for horror sights on TV? Pass me a Pop-Tart, this is why I watch only DVDs and don't rely on TV.
rcbrad 09-09-2019, 08:14 PM WOW People actually think that St Jude's Children's hospital may be a scam and that Marlo exploits sick kids? I have never heard anyone talk that way about Marlo or St Jude's!
I imagine if you had a child with severe cancer you would feel differently?
Bonniegirl 09-09-2019, 08:38 PM I regularly donate money to St. Judes. I think it's a very legitimate organization that Marlo's Dad Danny kind heartedly started many years ago. :) I don't see Danny and now Marlo being the type if people that would exploit children and run a scam!.
I gladly donate, being a Mother I am so thankful I have two healthy Sons that never had to succumb to a horrible disease like cancer! But if I did, I 'd hate for people to think it was a scam and not donate !:(
Long live St. Judes !!;)

Yea St. Judes is not a scam.
Samme 09-10-2019, 11:29 PM I agree about St.Jude being a fine charity. Although I wish all commercials were no more than one minute, I also think those by the Shriners for those kids are extremely touching. Those kids are very deserving of the attention and help and the Shriners deserve great credit for doing that. They deserve our help and that loving care.
Hazel Anyday 09-11-2019, 10:17 PM I don't care if Judes is crooked or not, all I know is their ads are still sickening and craven in their pity seeking shameless club over your head methods. They may be a deserving charity, may be, but they have no business on my TV tube interrupting forever my wonderful TV shows. I want ads for Kelloggs Corn Flakes and Pudding not armless & bald kids or beaten beasts. Keep that crap off TV this junk never used to pollute the airwaves. Is it too much to ask for Ford ads?

Hardly a Scam..if fact, it fulfills a promise Danny made to St Jude, the Catholic patron saint of loss causes, when he was a struggling performer.

To the original poster, indeed Marlo Thomas is wealthy, 3 million and upwards not including Phil’s net worth or her father’s inheritance. And to those in support of her charity you really haven’t done the necessary work. There is a task force that researches charities thoroughly and it’s easily accessible by googling it. It is run by a woman who is very knowledgeable about how 501c3’s work. Indeed, MT is the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of her father Danny Thomas’s foundation. Personally, I am disgusted how these charities are completely tax free while other private sector for profit medical healthcare systems are sending average Joe’s like me to the poor house due to lack of comprehensive medical care coverage and affordability. Medicare will only cover 80%. OOP is 20%. How does a person drawing SS pay 20%? I’m sickened how Big Pharma sits back and collects while the Marlo’s of the world are sitting cushy in their nonprofits. Moreover, how does Marlo sleep at night while her father Danny passes the baton from Father to daughter while exploiting very sick kids for profit? This is not a nonprofit when your paying 6 figure salaries to staff. And what about child selections? With those high salaries you could’ve saved more children by lowering these salaries to a more reasonable amount. I would have much rather seen Danny Thomas fight in Congress for M4A some fifty years ago then to see him build an empire for some sick children instead of for all who battle cancer or any illness. Jerry Lewis same with his telethons. These men got rich off of their celebrity status by using the undesirable calamity of the less fortunate. Seems honorable, but not really. And I’m reminded of this every time I see Marlo’s despicable bleeding heart commercials where she begs for donations every hour on the hour. Same with ASPCA. All these charities need to start paying federal taxes and we need celebrities like Marlo to stand up and start changing the tide of healthcare in this country and push for M4A so that EVERY sick person can get the care he or she needs at any age. But with the fringe benefits and kick backs, I doubt any of these high paying salaried charity CEO’s will ever see the unethical and amoral practices of their supposed non profit organization that promises relief from suffering. I’d like to know the ratio of high salaried doctors vs. the number of children dying of cancer who were saved. Could it had been more with less bonuses going to these so called doctor saints? One can only hope. Go Google research charities and you’ll find the article on Marlo and her shady charity.

An easy solution is turn your TV to mute and multi-task. Check email or surf the net til the commercial ends. The commercials bring in revenue, so like it or not, they are not going anywhere. Without them, the free channels would no longer be free. And while most of Antenna’s commercials are LONNGG & annoying, I don’t feel that way about the St. Jude’s commercials at all, given the topic.
I watch more on YT and from my DVDs these days anyways.

Coffeecup 08-27-2021, 10:59 PM The tv ads are awful. I agree, what ever happened to cereal, toys, chewing gum, coffee, cars.Only ads I wasn't crazy in the 1960's were playtex bras and tampons and Midol and I blushed for I was child. All you have now are aliment ads or help the needy type ads . I do think the stations I listen to have ads geared toward the oldies. The older gal embarrassed about buying her Depends type under wear and now getting them in brown packages so the mailman won't know. I hate the ads for I hate think I may use the products in my older years. Thank the lord I get fast forward the ads.
Coffeecup 07-01-2023, 08:31 PM I am thankful I have a DVR so I can zip through the ads. I like many posters wonder what ever happened to cereal ads, candy, toys, coffee and even one for bras that I used to see in the 1970's. Can't be any worse seeing bra ads than underwear for leaky bladders. Looking back the ads 40 to 70 years ago were better than today. Not that I like ads but today all medical, insurance and charities. Gee as I looked at my 2021 post, I changed a bit from seeing bras
ThisLittlePiggy 07-01-2023, 11:47 PM I was just thinking about this earlier in the week. I miss the days of more food products ads. Candy, soda, coffee! I remember those old coffee ads for Yuban and Maxwell House. Good to the last drop. I get so tired of all the long ads now that go on and on and on.

I don't think St. Jude is a scam but their approach of parading sick kids in front of the cameras is shameful. Ditto for ASPCA and Shriners.
There is only one reason they do this: it works! Then St. Jude says they don't ask the parents of sick kids for any money. ANY money! Yet they come on TV asking viewers for $19 a month. It's a non-sequitur.
I also agree with other posters: Whatever happened to TV ads for products?
cd637299 07-02-2023, 08:47 AM I know this is the Marlo thread, but since commercials are mentioned….
As someone born in 1959, how I remember old product ads. Also as someone who doesn’t pay to watch TV, my choices are limited.
I would assume any candy/toy/cereal ads are on kids’ cable networks, so I don’t see any. What we have today, at least for someone my age is:
Boo-koo ads for new medications, to where listing the possible risks takes longer than the rest of the ad, so they don’t get sued.
Also, although I haven’t seen it lately, is some poorly-worded ad for some national insurance-or-some-such deal:
“If you or a loved one has gotten sick or hospitalized, or even died, YOU might be able to collect….” That one kills me—not literally, of course!
cd
ThisLittlePiggy 07-02-2023, 01:05 PM We hijacked the Marlo thread. LOL Oops. Sorry, Marlo! But yeah, I miss all the cereal ads but maybe it's because I don't often watch kid shows. They could throw us older folks a Wheaties ad now and then. I don't ever see coffee ads anymore and I love coffee.
