This isn't an insult to Gabe Kaplan or even to Gabe Kotter but I've just started watching the DVD's from Season one and is it just me or is Mr. Kotter's voice really loud? I always have to turn down the volume whenever he speaks b/c it sounds like he's yelling. The weird thing is that I have to turn the volume on my TV up to like 20 to even hear the DVD's and I don't have that problem with my other DVD's.
That being said, it's been fun reacquainting myself with the show again after so many years! It's dated, that's for sure but it still makes me laugh!

I imagine part of the reason has to do with the fact that the show was filmed live before an audience. Sitcoms are essentially filmed stage plays and in the theater, actors are told to "play to the back rows," to project, and that's why shows like WBK have the actors be very loud.
I don't think Gabe Kaplan was any louder than the other actors on the show and besides, these were NYC characters. Aren't NYC people loud and in your face typically?

Because he's a New Yorker and he's Jewish!:D I'm not saying that being insulting but Jewish and Italian people ( I love them both) are known for being loud, esp. from the East coast ! ;)

Gabe Kaplan was awesome in the 1970's, he was funny on Welcome Back Kotter and his basketball movie titled Fast Break is pretty good also. I have the movie on a VHS tape from Columbia Pictures. The VHS of Fast Break might be a collectors item now because it's long out of print.
He may have also been "loud" to keep his students attention...

One could say he was the Anti Mr. Peepers (played by Brando's bestie Wally Cox who later voiced Underdog).
