Can someone please tell me what episode this was in Season 1? She was the mother from Massachusetts that vanished one afternoon. It’s believed it could have been a botched abortion. Thx

That one was not covered by UM. I see that Crystal Dawn did a article on the case for her blog lostnfound. Robin W. also did a podcast about the case too.

Thx for the reply. Are you sure it was never covered by UM? I swear I remember seeing it. 😮

Maybe your thinking of Judy Hyams?

The actual spelling of her last is "Risch." I tried to find the name on the UM Wiki page, but it didn't come up. In other words, the case was never on the show.

Also, since you mentioned "botched abortion," you might be confusing the Joan Risch with Judith Himes, whose 1965 disappearance was documented on UM during its third season in January 1991. Also, both women went missing during the 1960s; Joan Risch disappeared in 1961.

Jeez, I could have sworn there was a segment about her. I remember the rumor was she wandered off after a botched abortion and may have fallen into a hole somewhere where a highway was being constructed in Mass. I thought I remembered UM showing her walking and holding her stomach. Maybe it was another show.

Yeah, Judith Himes was the "botched abortion" case...

I've always been fascinated by this case but i think i have a theory that pretty much explains it.

The thing is 3 generations of this family seem to have put themselves in strange and dangerous situations. We know that Joans parents died in a house fire that we are told could have been prevented, that fire fighters said they couldn't understand how it happened and really shouldn't have,we have Joan wandering off and later going missing but heres the thing we also have her son, at the young age of 43 david risch was put in a care home in haverhill (about 40 mins away from where his mother vanished).

From time to time he goes wandering, they've found him lay down in fields, wandering miles away with no purpose. this seems to be a common event.

Could there be some underlying genetic illness in this family that only appears once in a while, where the person isn't mentally competent and able to make sane choices where they put themselves in dangerous situations?

The day that joan went missing she had been to the dentist, was she given some medication that triggered this underlying problem? just down the road from her home there were major road works taking place with a hole more than big enough for someone to fall in and not be seen, it was soon filled in.

I think theres some genetic mental illness in this family that maybe only appears once in a while, that maybe given the era was never noticied or diagnosed, but theres something in this family.
