View Full Version : What's with the trend of Emotional Support Animals and comfort pets?
Hawkee 08-21-2019, 01:47 AM I'm noticing that people are now having Emotional Support Animals and comfort pets and I would like to know why this trend of having Emotional Support Animals and comfort pets became popular? Is it because animals are supposed to help people calm down when they have a panic attack or become ill or are these types of animals are used as companions for people? Because I have seen animals such as mini horses and mini pigs being used as comfort pets and I have never figured it out. It used to be that blind people had guide dogs that they would take everywhere and now I see animals such as dogs that can help people in wheelchairs to dogs that can calm people with diabetes when they feel ill to dogs to animals that can sense epilepsy attacks in people and what I can see is that this trend will continue to be popular for years to come. A second thing I have noticed is that people are now bringing their Emotional Support Animals and comfort pets on vacations on airplanes and hotels and what I can see is that the animal will escape the airplane or get sick or if you have your animal in your hotel there's a chance that the animal will cause damage to the hotel room or have an accident in bed. But they should be comfort pets that are easier to handle and can easily taken care of

Where I live you see people with dogs on public city busses and in stores and restaurants that are supposed to he "comfort pets" as you described but I seriously don't think all these dogs are legitimately comfort pets! I think they are just regular pets and a lot of people are taking advantage of the system ! I'm thinking lots of people that have their dogs with them on the busses and stores and such have no physical or emotional disability at all! Of course some do but I really don't think all do !!
TSMIV 08-21-2019, 09:37 AM "Emotional support animals" is total BS.

I know. It sounds like something you'd see in Mad magazine or something!
Plus how do they prevent the animal from making a mess all over the floor?
Coffeecup 08-24-2019, 09:51 AM People are pushing boundaries more and more. To a certain degree, I think people have their cat, dog or gerbil as their true loved one. People who don't have human to love. now have an animal.
DJM77 08-24-2019, 11:09 AM My wife suffers from social anxiety pretty bad. Whenever we go somewhere together she says that I'm her emotional support animal.

They don't.
SitcomsHeydayfan 08-25-2019, 02:46 AM They don't.
Then that can create a big mess depending on the animal!

What kind of pet do you have?
James28 09-11-2019, 11:28 AM Another point that should be raised here is this: Why does it always have to be real live animals providing emotional support to humans, and why can't it ever be stuffed animals doing the same? Is it because real live animals are at a higher level of comfort than stuffed animals? I don't believe this.
Steve_uk 09-11-2019, 02:06 PM I don't own a pet myself but realize that they can provide enjoyment and reduce blood pressure. May I recommend playing a musical instrument from which similar pleasure can be attained?
They don't.
Nothing like seeing dog crap piles on the floor of an airport.
I'm ok with dogs, cats, pigs or other small animals for emotional support or as comfort pets. I might draw the line at alligators.
A Philadelphia Phillies fan and his emotional support alligator, Wally, were denied entry into Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The fan, identified by The Philadelphia Inquirer as Joie Henney, arrived at Citizens Bank Park walking Wally on a leash, claiming the nearly 5-foot alligator as his service animal.

JamesG 09-28-2023, 03:17 PM Friend of mine goes everywhere with her chihuahua and we were having drinks at a bar with outdoor seating. This dog doesn’t stop barking and is annoying.
She stepped to the bathroom and an employee comes up to me and asks me if I can quiet the dog. I told him it’s not my dog and I’d stomp on it if it were up to me. Everyone around me gasped and were like “How dare you!!” heaven forfend.
I love dogs, but just like with people it doesn’t mean everyone.
dakert 09-28-2023, 04:51 PM I enjoy watching the pets on youtube. Comfort Gators, otters hana and kotaro, James the raccoon whisperer, Monkey BiBi,

Wally's owner isn't smoking what he really needs...

:rotflmao: The picture of adult alligators or kangaroos sitting amongst the passengers is hilarious. I really hope this isn't true
Duster76 09-28-2023, 10:58 PM At this point the entire service animal designation has become a joke. Pigs, alligators should not qualify under any circumstances. I know a young woman (25) who had her dog designated as a service animal. She likes to take her dog with her sometimes so she had it designated as a service animal. We've all seen things like this, a good idea gets abused and becomes a farce. How many people here know individuals who have been able to secure a handicapped parking placard that don't really need it.
rusty spike 09-29-2023, 10:06 AM I think we have an entitled people problem. I love my pets, but they stay home. I don't push them on anyone, especially when in public.
Caroline13 09-29-2023, 03:03 PM And how does a human become the owner of an alligator, steal one from the Swamps????
What a huge volume of dopes....
biffbronson 09-30-2023, 06:30 AM I just heard a MeTV anecdote that Raymond Burr pranked Barbara Hale by putting a baby alligator in her desk.
I've noticed in the past year or so people bringing their dogs into stores. Likely relatively few are specially trained in any way. It's a little surprising from a liability standpoint -- with the dog in an unfamiliar environment, there's no knowing how it will act. (Then again, some people's kids are worse than animals!)
Coffeecup 09-30-2023, 12:46 PM Fill me in a little. I don't own an animal. There are service animals mostly dogs or maybe a monkey. Both could help with retrieving items for a wheelchair bound person. Or help with barking to non seeing person who could sense a person at the door. The animal can help a lot. The owner (is this correct) must have a vest on the animal saying they are a service animal. Now with the Emotional animal it seems anything goes. Is it it up to the management to say No admittance. How about the old store sign. :We can refuse admittance to anyone". In my home town I haven't seen too many oddballs. .

Could be on this store owners are permitting customers to bring their dogs with them as business has been so horrid since covid that the stores are giving in to get the food business up. I have no desire to own any animal. A bf and I decided to get a pair of parakeets and that lasted a few days, found a home for them. Dirty Birds!!!!!!
On the Burr and Hale story, maybe it was a baby lizard. My grandson went thru that phase of taking care of a lizard, I think he called him Ben, could have been a female but Ben it was.
Guess who was going a little nuts buying food for that lizard, my daughter was often shopping for crickets at the pet stores.....
Janice Johnson 09-30-2023, 08:29 PM Publix has a sign saying that Emotional Support animals are NOT allowed in the store. I was surprised to see that sign.
biffbronson 10-01-2023, 12:32 PM i have a lot of crickets around my house in September especially, so there would be no need for lizard owners in my area to buy them...!
It was an alligator that Burr put in Hale's desk, not a lizard:
"To boost his own morale, and those of coworkers, on the "Perry Mason" set, Burr played practical jokes, including a now-famous one in which he hid a baby alligator in a desk drawer that he knew Barbara Hale would have to open, because she used to balance her checkbook and write letters while poor Burr was rehearsing his reams and reams of courtroom dialogue."

Oh I'm relieved to know that critical Truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now did Burr get the baby alligator at a pet store, do they sell them there??
