I also wonder why family did not help out with financial situation, especially with three grown children. Florida could have got a part time job, and JJ and Thelma work couple of hours after school.

On low or minimum wage salary (its even more true today than in 70s), there is no way one person can support a family of 5.

I think James is also to blame. He did say many times that he the sole bread winner for the family and the only one who should bring home the bacon. I think he was even oppose to Florida working.

On a side note, I always thought that James probably could have got better paying job than working at car wash or washing windows. Being a combat veteran and good physique, he probably could have been a security officer or correction officer.

Especially since we will never know what would have come out of the job interview in season 2 that he never went to because he thought it would be another door slam lol
