Does anyone here have a fear of elevators?

I don't exactly fear them but sometimes I am nervous when in one. I keep thinking if the power goes out or there is a mechanical failure. It would not be fun to be stuck in an elevator!

I use the stairs when possible. Good exercise, too.

I always have a fear that the elevator will lose control and go straight through the roof of the building. I feel like this when I am in a really tall skyscraper.

I'd rather 30 sets of stairs than ride in an elevator

I used to be uneasy around elevators but over time I got used to it. I just try not to think about what could go wrong.

Yes, that was my vote, too.

Stairs are a lot less stressful!

There's also the claustrophobic element, and I suppose in America there's further to travel upwards. I bet if you survived 9/11 you wouldn't use one again. I voted yes.

A few years back I remember watching a show about surviving emergencies, they were
saying, if you are in a elevator that is dropping uncontrollably, start jumping up and down.
That will give you a 50/50 chance, that you might be in the air upon impact, thus increasing your chance of survival. I guess it would be worth a try!

Makes sense to me. Probably betting than doing nothing.

I don't really have a fear of elevators but if given the option of riding an elevator or climbing some stairs, I'll usually choose the stairs.

The dentist I used to have years ago had his office on the 6th floor of an 8 floor office building. The elevators were manually operated, when the elevator doors opened there was a person sitting there on the side who was running the elevator, and man did that elevator move fast! It went from the 1st to 6th floor in a matter of seconds, I could feel the pressure as the elevator was moving and the inside of my ears would pop. Not a good feeling.

Yep, it was back in the 1960's and 70's when the building had manual operated elevators. I believe it was sometime in the 1980's when the building changed from the manual elevators to automatic ones. The building I'm talking about is the Carlson Building, office building in Evanston Illinois. I think it was built sometime in the 1920's.

OH Nuts!

I voted sometimes. The only elevators that give me the willies are glass elevators. If I didn’t have arthritis in my left knee, I’d opt for the stairs too. Unfortunately, walking up to the fourth floor SLOWLY is pretty much my limit.

Sometimes I get worried about getting stuck in one but the elevator in my office breaks down ALL the time and we only have ONE and we are on the fourth floor.

I don't have a fear of elevators but if I had a choice most of the time I take the stairs. I do have a bit of fear when it comes to escalators. I fear I will miss the first step and fall.

Actually what you are supposed to do if the elevator drops is to lie as flat on the floor as possible distributing your weight evenly. Jumping up and down will not help you because you are really not jumping up in the elevator, just slowing your fall slightly because the elevator is dropping.

I live and work in high rises and don't really worry much about elevators. Years ago I did work in the Empire State Building and one of our bank of elevators did fall with people in it. They were slightly injured.

The only fear I have about elevators is that I’m afraid they’ll be ‘out of service’ and I’ll have to use the stairs.

No I don't have a fear of elevators. Although the taller the building is, you find the elevators everywhere. I think of the huge tall skyscrapers that are being built and I can't imagine being on the 29th floor and thinking "What if the elevator doesn't work". Lugging myself down 28 flights of stairs would not be easy. I personally think you shouldn't have buildings over 5 stories. All sorts of problems could happen. I am living in a 3 story house can't imagine living so high up in big building.
