View Full Version : Were parts of the "Over Our Heads" set recycled for other NBC shows

Most specifically, the diner set (The Max) on Saved by the Bell. I mean the color schemes (with the pinks and what not) on each set are awfully similar.

I don't think so. The pink walls were just a sign of the times: the late 1980s. It's like asking if the costumes on The Facts of Life came from Miami Vice.

The only part of the two sets that really even look the same are the glass block windows, which were common in the 1980s. The OOH set had pillars to hold merchandise; the Max set had booths so people could eat. The only chairs in the OOH set were metal and would have probably been very uncomfortable to sit in. The neon signs couldn't have been recycled.

Yeah, probably just how the times were (also of note: I have never seen a full episode of SBTB).

Miss Bliss must be juuuuuuust off camera ;)

This "block windows" talk also reminds me of the game show "Scrabble". While not windows, blocks were everywhere!

Man, I loved watching S at my grandparents'. :loveya:

That totally shocks me, '80s! You're such a child of the '80s. I mean, sure, SBTB didn't start until 1989, but counting GMMB, it would have been 1987.

Oo! OO! They could've done a FOL edition of FF! "Lost Girls" versus "Garrett's Girls"!

Team 1:

Miss Mahoney - team captain
Nancy
Sue Ann
Cindy
Molly

Team 2:

Mrs. Garrett - team captain
Blair
Jo
Natalie
Tootie

This means, at the buzzer stand, the "'Facts' Face-Offs" would be:

Miss Mahoney versus Mrs. Garrett (a.k.a. Emily versus Edna)
Nancy versus Blair
Sue Ann versus Jo
Cindy versus Natalie
Molly versus Tootie

(Note: One may replace Miss Mahoney with Mr. Bradley if one wishes. Then it would be "Bradley's Brood" versus "Garrett's Girls", lol)

Oohhhh, to go back in time and make this happen!!

Well, wasn't GMMB only on The Disney Channel? I do have a hazy beloved memory of seeing a few minutes of an episode at I think my grandparents' in the evening (they got a satellite dish when I was a kid), because I thought so highly of Hayley Mills thanks to her Disney movies (I'd seen "The Parent Trap" as a kid, and would see more when I was older).

Weirdly enough, the original pilot of GMMB (https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=dQ9n_vzVOwY) aired on NBC. I watched it in 1987 on my local NBC station. Perhaps '80s saw it there as well?

Not sure why they used such a sappy theme song. I think that may be the same school set as Boy Meets World; it certainly looks similar, and it was the same production company (Touchstone) that produced both BMW and the GMMB pilot.

I knew that was coming! The writers would never allow Nancy to answer a question! That would entail giving Felice a line, and they already did that.

GMMB originally aired on Wednesdays on the Disney Channel in 1988, and then moved to Saturdays in 1989. SBTB (the original series, anyway) originally aired on Saturday mornings on NBC because it was considered light kiddie fare. It later aired in syndication on TBS in the afternoons. For syndication, the producers even spliced in the GMMB episodes, using the GMMB episodes and replacing the original credits with SBTB credits to create a "Season Zero" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Saved_by_the_Bell_episodes#Good_Morning,_Miss_Bliss), bringing the syndication package up to (I think) 126 episodes.

Broadcast

Original pilot

The original pilot for Good Morning, Miss Bliss aired on July 11, 1987, on NBC (in The Facts of Life's timeslot). Hayley Mills would be the only actress to carry over from the pilot to the series. Up-and-comers Brian Austin Green (who later got his big break on Beverly Hills, 90210) as Adam Montcrief, Jaleel White (who later got his big break on Family Matters) as Bobby Wilson, and Jonathan Brandis (who later got his big break on seaQuest DSV) as Michael Thompson were among some of the actors to appear in the pilot. Green was, in essence, the "lead" student in the pilot, a particularly serious student, who wore business suits.

All this GMMB talk and my hazy memory of seeing Hayley in at least part of one episode on The Disney Channel at my grandparents' has me nostalgic to see the whole "zero" season. :)

Really? That's considered his big break? I never heard of that show. I've heard of the actor from other work I would consider big. The Stepfather movies series is one of the best along with the original Stephen King's It movie.

I dunno, I don't know the guy, lol. But his Wikipedia page says:

-

In 1993, at the age of 17, he was cast in the role of Lucas Wolenczak, a teen prodigy on the NBC series seaQuest DSV. The character was popular among teenage female viewers, and Brandis regularly appeared in teen magazines.

-

In looking at his filmography, I just saw him in a guest appearance on a season 5 episode of "Who's the Boss?" and didn't know it.

Enjoy! :)

I think there are actually many links between GMMB/SBTB and FOL: Both NBC shows with NBC exec Brandon Tartikoff being involved in decision making on both shows. The FOL timeslot for the original pilot, both shows being (originally) set in a school, both shows having half of their cast axed after the first season (Nikki, Mikey, Miss Bliss, Mylo, and Miss Paladrino suddenly "went missing"), with only one adult school staffer being retained after the first season.

I do, however, believe FOL was a better show, with situations being more realistic, and not as many odd continuity issues that marred SBTB/GMMB. For example, we still hear from the Lost Girls on FOL, whereas with SBTB/GMMB, once a character is gone, he or she is gone. Forever. And never even mentioned again. The only exception I can remember is Zach once mentioning Nikki, during one opening scene introducing a "Season Zero" episode, presenting the episode as a flashback.

Really? To me, that theme just sound like a rip-off of "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now".

But to each his own.

I guess it's because, for me, I never knew that version: I went from seeing the NBC pilot, to watching SBTB on Saturday mornings, to then getting (in the early 1990s) the GMMB episodes presented as SBTB, complete with the SBTB credits and Zach spliced in, presenting the "Season Zero" episodes as flashbacks. So I never saw the original credits until I saw them a few years ago on YouTube.

I do realize that's revisionist history, though: I feel very differently when someone calls Star Wars "A New Hope" or says Greedo shot first. I know better!

You know that's interesting b/c I thought that "Over Our Heads" set looked kind of familiar. I liked it better on Saved By The Bell, though. That store idea was completely lame. They should have rebuilt Edna's Edibles, but that's for a different discussion!

I agree, although at the time, I thought it was cool. I must have been, like, ten though.

I think it definitely would have helped keep Charlotte on the show. She was just so out of place in Fake Spencer's, and I think she knew it. Might as well put her in a goth outfit at Hot Topic and be done with it.

Didn't Lisa Whelchel say she stole a blown up palm tree from the set once?

I doubt the set was used again, although the aesthetic was popular through the early '90s. I personally loved the glass blocks of the '80s.

On a related note, I noticed something interesting. I was recently watching Bring on the Funny on NBC. And in the second episode, there's a backdrop that looks eerily similar to the Facts of Life season 1 main living lounge. Instead of Eastland on the flag in the background on the wall, it says Danceland  This was a parody of current music artists, and no mention of Facts of Life was utilized. Coincidence? Maybe, but this is from the same network that brought us The Facts of Life, so it's very possible they drew inspiration from the first season set.

HUH. I definitely see the resemblance you're seeing. Especially the door to the back, and the window next to the front door, as well as the staircase.

The Danceland banner, the old photos of classes on the wall, and the wallpaper itself, IMO, confirm it: someone deliberately used an Eastland VR set.
