View Full Version : Looks like Antenna TV is the best channel for Retro TV in 2019
TVFactFan 08-03-2019, 02:50 PM They seem to air shows from every decade and my only issue is their scheduling. They have a great lineup of old sitcoms but they air them at odd times. Like Three's Company and the Ropers airing at 9am to 11am on sundays instead of 9pm to 11pm
That 9am to 11am slot should be filled with Webster and Silver Spoons but that's my only issue with the channel. Overall I am glad these shows now are able to be seen in 2019
Mchale's Navy
What's Happening Now
Three's a Crowd
The Ropers
Head of the Class
Silver Spoons
Lotsa Luck
The Paul Lynde Show
Gimmie a Break
Alice
Is there any other channel whether it's cable or digital that airs retro tv classics like Antenna TV? Plus they have a back to school marathon coming up in 2 weeks with Welcome Back Kotter

They need to shake things up and add some new shows. I have grown very tired of their schedule. It's very stale to me.
OH Nuts! 08-03-2019, 07:09 PM I’ve always loved Antenna so no argument from me...esp. as it’s free
stevea 08-03-2019, 07:10 PM They're probably the 2nd digital network, behind MeTV. The rest of them are also-rans.
One problem is they use episodes already cut for syndication, and with many older shows, the edits are just plain awful.

Yes...I can tell some eps are a bit over-edited; but not for all Shows it airs. Antenna’s not perfect but for a free channel I have no complaints.
1960'sTVfan 08-03-2019, 07:48 PM I give Antenna TV a thumbs up for airing The Joey Bishop Show, I just wish the episodes were uncut instead of the chopped up edited versions they're airing.
Also thumbs up to Antenna for airing some of these one season wonder sitcoms like My Mother The Car, It's About Time, Good Morning World, Lotsa Luck, and The Paul Lynde Show. Only thing about The Paul Lynde Show is that Antenna has only 19 of the 26 episodes, 7 episodes are missing.

Sorry, free is not always better. That's why I purchase dvds so I can create my own personalized schedule.
I just can't watch the same sitcoms over and over again without some kind of a break. I realize a lot of these shows are probably under long term contracts however, I've seen Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Barney Miller, and Three's Company thousands and thousands of times. I also like to watch dramas. Not just sitcoms all of the time.

If your issue is a personalized schedule you could burn eps to a DVD with the timer on a DVD Recorder—and then watch your shows whenever you want.
BUT if your issue is the selection offered, then YES a paid service or product would better address your needs.

I think the only show I have not seen on Antenna TV is
Who's the Boss
Chico and The Man
BigManMike 08-04-2019, 08:52 AM The biggest problem is the credit crunch. That makes it unwatchable.

I know for many it’s a deal-breaker. But considering how sh*tty some paid/premium channels are Antenna’s still fine with me-warts and all.(and yes I will concede credit-crunching IS a wart.)
Tubehead 08-04-2019, 10:45 AM sorry i don t get Antenna TV!! they changed it to light tv!! i wish they would bring it back!!
stevea 08-04-2019, 04:31 PM As far as crunching the credits goes, it would be great if they recognized a lot of viewers like those TV themes. Particularly viewers of the old sitcoms that Antenna shows.
I'd like to think Nexstar will be more likely to recognize this than Tribune was, but I'm not holding my breath.
1960'sTVfan 08-04-2019, 04:47 PM The pending change of ownership is likely a reason why Antenna TV's schedule has stayed the same for awhile. Once the new ownership takes over I imagine there will be schedule changes and maybe the credit crunches will be gone too.
stevea 08-04-2019, 05:51 PM Yep, a lot of changes probably coming for Antenna TV. Probably some inside-baseball technical changes, eventually, since it emanates from the Chicago area now, and this isn't Nexstar's base of operations. I'd hope they don't rebrand it, since it seems to be quite successful.

I imagine they would probably keep the Antenna TV name, but who knows, a name change could be possible too. Whenever changes to the schedule take place, I expect several shows will be dropped and several new ones added. Will be interesting to see if Antenna TV remains basically a sitcoms channel or if it will become a MeTV like channel with different types of shows, not just sitcoms. And will Johnny Carson still be on the schedule after Nexstar takes over?
AMackII 08-05-2019, 07:10 AM Its great Antenna TV is doing very good so far this year with Johnny Carson airing every night at 10/9c.
Crusinforabrusin2.5 08-08-2019, 01:09 PM Antenna TV is ok. I wish they'd stop showing those one hit wonder shows though. They're one hit wonders for a reason.

Hey come on! Some of those one hit wonders are good shows! Good Morning World being one of them! I would love to see some short lived shows from the 80s like Almost Grown.
TVFactFan 08-08-2019, 10:08 PM I hope they show Chico and the Man and New Bill Cosby Show one day
mandyrenee 08-08-2019, 10:34 PM I hope they show Chico and the Man and New Bill Cosby Show one day
Bill Cosby and most of his shows have been banned from television.
cfr1970 08-09-2019, 01:38 AM I love Antenna TV and it's the channel I leave my TV on during the days. I don't mind the morning/afternoon hours showing the same shows over and over because i'm usually doing other things, and I keep the channel on just to have something playing in the background that I know I like.
I've seen Bewitched, Jeannie, Hazel, and Partridge Family cycle dozens of times over and over, but for me, it's comforting and familiar having them playing every day in the background while I go about my day. So I hope those shows will always play during morning/afternoon hours and never get taken away.
Evening/Prime time is different though because I actually sit down to watch and crave new shows to be added during those hours. I got so sick of Alice and Barney Miller that a few months ago I began hopping over to Buzzr channel during the evenings hours for new stuff, but even those shows are repeating now. So I hope new shows for Antenna TV prime time are on the way soon or it's back to DVD's every night for me.

.
Don't get me wrong. I like those shows also. However, like everything else I need a break from them at times. I just can't watch a certain TV Show over and over again without a break from it. Once I watch a show all of the way through I usually have to wait about 4 to 5 years before I can watch it again.
Plus I don't like marathons. That is one of the big things that is wrong with modern day television. I believe in having a variety of different shows. Not the same ones over and over again for hours at a time.
Schmoopie 08-10-2019, 02:13 AM I love Antenna TV as well although I don't watch as many shows on that station. I did kind of fall back in love with Welcome Back Kotter and I ended up getting the DVDS from the library so I'm excited to watch those.
However, Me-TV is my favorite right now. But that being said I hope they don't change Antenna TV a whole lot. I like having two different channels to watch.
TVFactFan 08-10-2019, 03:14 AM Antenna TV scheduling for marathons is all screwed up. Why air the Welcome Back Kotter Marathon on a freaking saturday in the summer time?
Merry24 08-10-2019, 10:49 AM Antenna TV is a Fabulous channel!
The suggestion I would have is it’s Scheduleing. I was a fan of NICK at NITE in the 80’s and 90’s. When it aired a lot of Family Programming Of Families from 1950’s-1960’s Plus the easy going Sitcoms Of The 70’s. I would like to see Antenna TV follow that Success. After a long hard day I’m more interested in seeing Family Shows from the 1950’s-1960’s and select ones from the 70’s at NITE & OVERNIGHT! Antenna TV’s WeekDay Morning/Early Weekday afternoon line up Plus the Current Saturday Night-Early Sunday Morning line-up is my Favorite about Antenna TV. I would love if the 6 other Nights would follow that formula. While Antenna TV’s daytime viewing can be for the 1970’s & 1980’s & 1990’s.
Onair promotion also I would like to see improving with referencing life in the 1950’s & 1960’s using stock footage. Using humor yet respecting it! Although I do enjoy Antenna TV’s Second look.
Marathons I feel need improving. Yes, I’m confused why Welcome Back Kotter isn’t on Labor Day? While the Coach Marathon should of been on that Saturday Welcome Back Kotter is on? Although some schools Return (August 19th Week).I LOVE Antenna TV’s Classic Christmas Collection & Antenna TV’s Christmas Through The Years. I wish they would air it through the Holiday Season or Another Weekend instead of Christmas Eve/Christmas. It’s hard to watch TV those days. Perhaps Fa-La-La Friday’s or Stocking Stuffer Weekends. Why do Marathons start at 5AM? I think a lot of shows are better episodes at the beginning I feel they should start at 12AM or 6pm or 9pm or 10pm.
Finally I’m very blessed to have Antenna TV since NICK at NITE & TVLand abandoned the format it’s been a blessing to find Better Living Through Television once again!!!!!
OH Nuts! 08-10-2019, 11:48 AM Nice to hear the nice remarks about Antenna. For a free channel it’s great. For those who want perfection, you may need to pony up for a premium channel—even then, there are no guarantees.

The sunday before Labor Day would have been perfect for the WBK marathon

Don't need any channels when you have a giant dvd collection. That means NO commercials and NO credit crunching.
The only free things that are good are universal healthcare and free college tuition.

Yes, I forgot about DVD collections being an option. But, then, you still have to spend the $ to amass the collection, and some will still have edited episodes ( I noticed this more for older shows though)

also with DVDs you have to go over to the player to load/unload it-which is especially a pain in the *** if you're in a wheelchair like me.
treky 08-11-2019, 12:55 AM Antenna TV used to be a great channel and they still could be if they'd only get rid of that HORRIBLEcredit crunch!!!
I've tried a few times to watch it and just ignore it, but I just...can't. It's a shame; they air a lot of shows I'd like to see.

Not only do you have to load/unload--you have to deal with the FBI warnings and and any trailers, each and every time. But it's worth it to miss all those stupid ads and most often see the full episode.
