Buffy Summers is one of the most iconic heroines in pop culture. Before starring in a beloved television series, Buffy was played by Kristy Swanson in a forgettable movie. Buffy wasn’t Swanson’s only shot at the big time, but it’s what she’s most remembered for. More than twenty-five years after originating the role of everyone’s favorite vampire slayer, Swanson gets more attention for her personal life and politics than she does for her performances.

What the hell happened?

Swanson’s most significant movie role to date was in the 1991 sequel, Mannequin Two: On the Move in which she somewhat convincingly played a department store mannequin who comes to life and falls for an employee played by William Ragsdale.

The following year, Swanson originated the role of Buffy Summers aka Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Swanson was the protagonist if not the star of the movie. Donald Sutherland was the biggest name in the cast and was treated accordingly. Luke Perry was at the peak of his 90210 popularity. If his fans would follow him to the movies, Buffy could have been a huge hit.

Of course they didn’t and it wasn’t. You’re probably aware that the movie was a mixed bag that did middling business at the box office. Writer Joss Whedon was driven off the set by conflicts with Sutherland and director Fran Rubel Kuzui. He was so disappointed in the final movie that he created a TV spin-off so he could put his own spin on his creation.

Swanson enjoyed making the movie. “It was fabulous. It was a great time of my life. I look back fondly at 1992. I’m grateful for that experience and getting to know all those guys. Paul Reubens is still a very good friend of mine and so is Luke. I’m still friends with quite a few of the crew members of that movie. Some of them were at my wedding.”

Buffy‘s disappointing box office didn’t slow Swanson down. In 1993, she appeared in the sports drama, The Program. The following year, she starred opposite Charlie Sheen in Adam Rifkin’s action movie, The Chase. She also costarred in the indie comedy, Getting In which costarred Andrew McCarthy and was the directorial debut for Doug Liman.
