Louis-Dreyfus tells Jimmy Kimmel that the series finale was almost ready to be sent to HBO when a producer asked about getting Hanks' permission for Veep's final joke. So she wrote him an email, and he quickly texted his approval back -- though she says Hanks was upset he wasn't cast as "the abortion doctor" in an earlier episode. Tom Hanks sent Veep creator a "very nice" but "badly typed" letter (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/why-tom-hanks-sent-veep-creator-armando-iannucci-a-personal-letter-1242692)

Armando Iannucci, who exited the HBO comedy after its fourth season, was asked about the series finale, in which Selina Meyer's state funeral in the future is knocked from the headlines by Hanks' death. "Yes! I was more sad for Tom Hanks," he responded to The Hollywood Reporter. "I think they had to ask his permission. But he sent me a very nice letter, which was badly typed on an old-fashioned typewriter, saying how much he liked the show. What was great, because I wasn't involved in the last couple of seasons, is that I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen next, so I was able to watch it as a normal viewer."
