English actress Eve Best celebrates her 48th today. Best studied literature at Oxford and appeared in several Dramatic Society productions. She made her London stage debut as Beatrice in a 1995 production of Much Ado About Nothing. She spent several years with the Royal National Theatre, appearing in productions of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and Three Sisters and Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra.

Best won an Olivier Award for starring in the title role of a 2005 revival of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. She made her Broadway debut in 2007, in a production of A Moon for the Misbegotten, and received her first of two Tony nominations. Her second followed a year later, for Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming.

Best has done relatively little film work. Anyone who has seen The King’s Speech might remember her in the role of Wallis Simpson. She is more familiar to TV audiences. She has been a regular on British series such as Vital Signs and The Honourable Woman. American audiences would know Best as Dr. Eleanor O’Hara from the first five seasons of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie.
