"Kristen (Bell) and I really want to keep doing more of these (limited, self-contained seasons), like the Sherlock and even Fargo templates," explained Rob Thomas in an interview with TVLine. "Something where, when we both have windows of availability, we can come back and do it. The thinking is that we need to survive as a noir detective show. And if we kept doing a show that was half teenage soap and half mystery show, the fear is it would start feeling like nostalgia. Going full mystery show gives us our best chance to survive. I think there’s a reason you don’t see many hard-boiled detective shows where the lead detective has a boyfriend or a girlfriend; it kind of limits your options. It was like we were cutting off a limb to save a life." He adds in an interview with EW: "Well, here’s the thing, I want to keep making Veronica Mars (https://ew.com/tv/2019/07/22/veronica-mars-creator-rob-thomas-explains-the-heartbreaking-season-4-finale/). Kristen and I have talked about making them until it’s Murder, She Wrote, and I think for the show to work that way it has to work as a noir detective show, and I think there is a reason that you don’t see many badass TV detectives with their boyfriend, or with their girlfriend. There is something romantic about that solitary P.I. figure out in the world and, also, I think there is a reason that shows tend to end when they get their romantic leads together. It’s hard to come up with interesting ways to make the relationship as vital as it was before they were together."

Conan O'Brien, NBC sitcoms, Star Trek and The Walking Dead were among this year's Comic-Con winners, according to Indiewire. However, Indiewire classified Veronica Mars and Game of Thrones as Comic-Con losers. Hulu's decision to surprise release Season 4 one week early was a "massive misstep," says Hanh Nguyen. "While this was supposed to be a gift to fans and did create a certain amount of excitement, it actually upset many plans for the self-styled Marshmallows who couldn’t drop everything to watch," says Nguyen. "Many of those who could were dismayed and outraged with the series, and unfortunately spoiled their fellow Marshmallows on social media. Fans who’ve watched and those who didn’t were unhappy, and to make matters worse, Hulu lost a lot of planned media coverage as critics and reporters were similarly blindsided, which left them with stories that either remained unwritten or were no longer relevant. What should’ve been a celebration of a beloved character’s return instead became a pop-culture nightmare." As for Game of Thrones, Friday's Comic-Con panel was set up to be a victory parade following the HBO drama's record 32 nominations three days earlier. But Game of Thrones left behind more bad buzz with creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss dropping out and star Conleth Hill blaming poor reception for the final season on a “media-led hate campaign."
