Did any of you post there? It was really fantastic because any TV show or movie you could think of had their OWN message board! Some of the really unheard of movies had ZERO posts on their boards.

Another really cool feature was that every ACTOR had his or her own message board too! I've not seen that on any other site anywhere. I posted many times of the John Ritter and Jay Leno message boards.

It was a hugely successful message board but they gave around a 6 month warning that they would shut down on 2/20/2017 & unfortunately they did.

Rumor has it that Amazon(who bought IMDB) didn't want bad movie/TV reviews getting out on the board. But that's a really DUMB reason IF true because you can find movie and TV reviews all over the web!

I was a member since 2003 and I liked it being a "free for all" where posters said whatever they wanted.

As for why they closed, IMDb said the boards were obsolete in the social media age but it is alleged that the real reason was that the boards couldn't be monetized.

I used to post a lot on Michael Lembeck's IMDB page about how cute and talented he is!! :):eyes::love:

And I used to love after I saw a movie posting about it on IMDB and reading other people's views on it!

And I remember the Brady Bunch IMDB page being really funny !! :D

I remember them; I wasn't a regular there, but I posted there once when I couldn't remember the name of an old 1970s movie, or who it starred, where it was filmed, who directed it, or anything useful. It was driving me crazy, not knowing the name of the film. All I could do was describe a scene. Within hours, someone had posted the name of the movie, based on one vague-half-remembered scene I recalled from 20+ years earlier! :D

I remember poring over a lot of the tv and movie boards. I never actually joined though.

It was cool and I learned a lot there. It was a horrible move to shut it down.

I was a semi-regular poster there. When they announced the shut down, some assumed it was because there was too much political fighting on the boards. I didn't post in the general topics boards so I didn't see much of the political stuff. I still miss it because there really isn't any place like it on the web. It was the most active site for TV/movie discussions.

I totally agree. I don't go to imdb nearly as much since they shuttered the boards so I doubt it was a good financial decision by Amazon. The site needs clicks just as much as any other.

I didn't know that Amazon now owns IMDB. That must explain why whenever I go on IMDB now to research some information, there are Amazon ads splattered all over the site.

I think I remember why. Were those the boards that wanted a cell number to verify you before you posted? I didn’t have a cell phone till after they ended.

(If that wasn’t IMDb, someone had that system that stopped me).

But the IMDB site itself isn't monetized! I've been going there almost 20 years & NEVER paid them a penny! I don't know anyone who has and I've never seen anything there for sale.

If you're talking about advertising then they could've added advertising to the message boards. Other boards have done that. Facebook comes to m ing which is basically one GIGANTIC message board!

Yes, there was political fighting & I was in some of those (PRO Trump of course) discussions but ALL political boards have arguments/debates!

The bolded line above is why I started this thread. There is NO place online that had SO many posts/threads on SO many different movies/TV shows/actors!

I wonder who was the IDIOT who made the final decision to kill the IMDB boards? I doubt it was Bezos himself. He might not even know they ever existed!

I miss the IMDB boards too!

Practically ALL message boards have arguing. It happens on here too. Plus I was on IMDB and the only regular arguing was in the politics section but not in most of the rest of site which was on every movie, TV show, & actor imaginable!

Right and there's no message board there. Even if there was it would horrible because very few people would be posting on it.

This proves my point that the boards did NOT close due to the inability to profit from it. So why did they shut down??

I used to post there at times. I remember being able to talk directly with Amanda McBroom (MASH, Hawaii 5-0, lots of other shows) and Pam Stone (Coach).

So while there was a lot of good info, there were unfortunately some true psychopaths on the loose. I remember one guy's thread, asking for a controversial opinion on comics, and when I gave him one, he totally went crazy trying shoot me down. I can live without some of that.

Yeah, there was some bullying and trolls there! I really think that is what led to the IMDB boards being shut down, I even remember reading somewhere that is why! :(

Not that my experience was that bad, but on the Leave it to Beaver page ,one time I posted how I got Benjie and Chucky Murdock ( the two little recurring blonde boy characters) mixed up and someone posted back that I was an idiot and only a moron would get those two characters confused!:confused: That was kind of rude, right?

I remember I "met" Ellen Hamilton Latzen on the IMDB boards. I could be misspelling her name.

She was the little girl in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. She said she was chosen out of a 1000 girls for such a small part! I think she only has 2 or 3 lines that entire movie.

So that was the only "celebrity" I met on there! :)

I posted on an Investigative Discovery channel page on IMDB ! I thought an actor who portrayed a criminal in a reenactment was really HOT!!:happyface He REALLY wAS !! Anyhow. supposedly he posted back to me? But I really have my doubts if is really was him or not? I kind of got the vibe it was just some guy / a troll pretending to be him! :p

I was a regular fixture on IMDB's horror boards in the 2000s, then I stopped posting for awhile and when I came back I pretty much stayed in the individual film boards. The horror board was one of the most popular boards on the site so it got hit a lot by the trolls which was the main reason I didn't go back to regularly posting in that section.

I still talk to a lot of the other regular horror board members on another site I belong to.

Amazon also had its own forums, and I posted on its horror board for awhile, but they shut those down too.

Why does Amazon make such dumb decisions like that?? Don't they realize popular message boards greatly INCREASE traffic to their sites?

I do recall the IMDB horror board. I didn't go there very often but it was very popular. IMDB had so many individual message boards it was mind boggling! Maybe more different boards than ANY other forum out there!

The IMDB boards were pretty popular back in the day. They were very easy to find and had millions of users. They were very basic without many bells and whistles. It just shows you can have a lot of activity if you have that many users. The same thing can be said for Reddit. They have a section for every topic you can imagine. They just don't have many special features like avatars, signatures, attachments, etc. It's hard to believe their company is valued at $3 billion.

I think they were closed because the upkeep of paying moderators and administrators became too much. They also realized that message board traffic advertising rates are far lower than other news content. They seemed to block all of their message board threads in the search engines, so you could never find them in Google. Their message boards never seemed to be a priority for them.

I thought we would see a surge of new registrations and activity after they closed them, but it never really happened. Social media is a big factor these days. Forums everywhere seem to have less people using them.

We have a pretty good core group of 300-500 regular posters. We have about 1900-2000 active members logged in the last 6 months. If we had double or triple those numbers, things would look a lot more busy. It's hard for us little guys to compete with those giants.

But every message board has moderators and admin & they're not usually even paid. How can you have a surge in registrations for the message boards when they no longer exist?? If you're talking about the main IMDB site then it's more likely the traffic would've gone down because now many people don't visit as much without the boards. Especially if there were MILLIONS of people on the IMDB boards!

How do you know the IMDB boards had MILLIONS of users?? I don't recall seeing that star mentioned on there.

I used to think that too but there are TONS of places on the web to see bad movie reviews.

Plus the OPPOSITE can be true too! A lot of good word of mouth can HELP a movie gain viewers.

I liked the message boards on IMDb. There could be discussions about any movie or TV show there. Instead of having separate websites and forums for all movies ever, IMDb was convinient to have them all on one website.

Yes! It had everything, you never needed to start a topic about an actor or movie, cause the boards had that established already. I was not much of a poster there, but definitely a reader. Too bad they closed it down. I think it was due to too much crap being posted.

I doubt that's the reason because there's crap on most ALL message boards.

Its demise is due to the inability to make enough money off it or the worry it would kill movie interest due to negative posts. Those 2 are my best guesses anyway.
