Here's another good tune from 1976 that failed to be a big hit, Henry Gross's "Someday". "Shannon" was the big hit at #6, but "Someday" stalled all the way down at #85. In some ways, I think "Someday" is the better song of the two despite not having much chart success.

Also, in between "Shannon" and "Someday", Henry Gross had a #37 hit with the song "Springtime Mama", this tune has a Beach Boys sound to it and isn't really to my liking.

I may be a bit prejudiced but after hearing Shannon for 43 years and Someday and Springtime Mama uh today. I still have to go with Shannon.
Bring out more lesser known songs

OK, I have a few more I can come up with, I'll try to post some later.
Just speculation, but I think what might have happened with "Shannon" is that while it was a #6 hit, there was also some negative reaction to the song which might have caused the follow up songs "Springtime Mama" and "Someday" to rank lower on the charts.

Do you know what the negative reaction was? --It was just a few years ago I found out it was about his dog that died.
When you get older it is hard to remember whether a few years ago was 3 or 20 :)

That's true, "Shannon" tells the sad tale of a pet dog that had passed away. But it's the type of song where there isn't much in between, either you like it or you don't. "Springtime Mama" sounds too much like a Beach Boys rip off, but "Someday" is a nice tune and I think it deserved to be a top 40 hit instead of stalling at #85.
"Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band is another song without much in between. Either you like it or you don't.
