The series is based on the Martin Scorsese film Alice doesn't Live Here Anymore. It was made in the 1970's and starred Ellen Burstyn and Kris Kristofferson. It's a good movie.

The cutest female sitcom characters had to be Justine Bateman from Family Ties and Lydia Cornell from Too Close for Comfort!

Well sure, and Diane Ladd played Flo in the movie and would later turn up as Belle on the TV show.

Vic Tayback was also in the movie as Mel. Alfred Lutter, who played Tommy in the movie, also played Tommy in the "Alice" TV pilot, but he was replaced by Phillip McKeon after the first episode.

I have seen this movie, I believe the actress who played Alice won the Oscar for best actress.

Interesting that as funny as Alice was the movie "Alice" was a drama. Besides M*A*S*H ( I always thought that movie was a drama but with a few funny scenes mixed in ) I wonder if there are many other sitcoms that started out a movie dramas?

It wasn't a drama, but The Odd Couple was a play, then a movie, before becoming a television series.
