They arguably or likely did well because they changed the nature (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Retool/LiveActionTV) of the show but in a slightly more realistic way. Of course the characters became more exaggerated versions (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Flanderization/LiveActionTV) of themselves which happens on most long running shows. But they seemingly grew up (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GrowingWithTheAudience) in a way that seemed real. There were new friends, break ups, etc. that seemed would actually happen.
