Surely you all know that in the original movie, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," Diane Ladd played "Flo." Her character (as well as the rest of the characters in the movie) was considerably more abrasive. She didn't say "Kiss my grits!" but did say more vulgar things.
When she joined the cast of "Alice" on TV as "Belle," "Mel" made reference to her coming back to the diner. In other words, they made it seem as though she had worked in the diner before. The only reason for this was to link Diane Ladd with the past (i.e., the movie), even though she was playing a different character.
Polly Holliday's "Flo" was the best. The show lost much when she left. After all, she was the original on the show; the show and movie were light years apart from one another, and comparing them would be like comparing apples and oranges.
