" And the operator says, 30 cents more for the next three minutes, PLEEEAAASE Mrs. Adrian , I just want to talk to her, I'll only keep her a while "!!!!!

How did I do? I haven't heard this song in years and I didn't watch the video!! ;)

If it were nowadays she wouldn't have to deal with the shrew , he'd be texting Sylvia!!:D

You’re close, but if this were the game show Don’t Forget The Lyrics, you lose.

It’s......

And the operator says
"Forty cents more, for the next three minutes"
Please Mrs. Avery, I've just got to talk to her
I'll only keep her a while

OMG !! I always thought it was Mrs Adrian ( or Adrienne) that is really what I thought he was saying when I heard this song, and thought it was a strange last name! Avery makes more sense !!;) But 40 cents back than?? I thought 30 cents was expensive for the groveling guy!!!

Why was he calling from a pay phone ? Did he not have a home phone ? No wonder Mrs. Avery didn't want this deadbeat with her Daughter !! :D Or was he calling from the road or something? I will have to listen to this song again!;)

I just listened to this! The original Dr. Hook version ! Now I'm crying ! This song is really sad!:( Somehow at 9 years old it didn't seem as sad and emotional as it does listening to it now!!

Nope, I'm not a Dr. Hook fan. The only Dr. Hook song that I find listenable is When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman. It's not a great song by any means, but it's the one Dr. Hook tune that I can listen to till the end and tolerate.

You don't like " On the cover of the Rolling Stone" ? That was a fun, really cool song !!:)

No, I don't care for that one either. Dr. Hook isn't my cup of tea, aside from the one song I mentioned.

Here is something silly, cool and fun to listen to, from the summer of 1974:

First Billy Don't Be A Hero, now Sylvia's Mother? I think you just hate songs with people's names in the title.

No, it has nothing to do with the titles, those two songs just aren't to my liking.

On the subject of songs with people's names in the title, two I've always liked are "Brother Louie" by The Stories, and "Angie Baby" by Helen Reddy. "Jackie Blue" by Ozark Mountain Daredevils is another good one.

I just talked to her and Sylvia's mother says Brother Louie is good (nothing was better then hot interracial lovin' on the AM dial), but Angie Baby and Jackie Blue are blah.

I like all three. I used to dislike Angie Baby but after hearing it several times on the top 40 AM radio station back in 1974 I started liking it. Rock Your Baby by George McCrae is another one I used to dislike, but again the AM top 40 station hammered the song into my head so many times and eventually my opinion changed from dislike to like.

The boys from Jersey did an AWESOME job with this! Jon Bon Jovi got ALL emotional singing this!;) He really seemed irate at that damned operator and not to happy with Mrs. Avery for that matter as shown in his hand gestures!:D

I think this is my favorite version. Even better than Dr. Hook maybe? ;)

Yep, "Little Willy" is a good one too. It was the breakthrough hit for The Sweet in the USA and they remained popular for a few years afterwards. "Ballroom Blitz", "Fox On The Run", "Action", and "Love Is Like Oxygen" were their other top 40 hits.

There were a lot of sad story songs in the early 70's that Sylvia's Mother seemed a bit too over the top emotionally that it is hard to take it seriously. It is a fun song to sing and listen to.

If you want to hear a really good version of Sylvia's Mother I recommend you listen to Bobby Bare's version because it's a really great version of it. I didn't even know that Dr. Hook originally sang it and I thought that Bobby Bare was the original singer of Sylvia's Mother. But poet Shel Silverstein wrote the song and for a poet Shel did a good job writing it

Hi, Bestie! Yes, Bobby Bare sang the best version. Dr. Hook did a pretty good version of it though. Shel Silverstein wrote some great country songs! My two favorites are "The Winner" and "Still gonna die" Both sung by Bobby Bare. If anybody here is afraid of the Corona, I suggest you listen to this song "still gonna die" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyO5B34xcfY

I haven't tuned in to this Music thread but I do indeed find it interesting. I love music from the 1940's to about mid 1980's.
