Halle Bailey has been cast Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which is slated to begin production in 2020.

The 19-year-old singer and actress, who stars on Freeform’s "grown-ish", is best known as one half of Chloe x Halle, the R&B duo act she shares with her younger sister Chloe.

Director Rob Marshall, who will helm The Little Mermaid as his first project after Mary Poppins Returns, said of the casting:

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”

Bought “Dumbo” yesterday and it was a horrid display. I have no faith at all in Disney anymore. I’ll just stick with the originals.

I haven't seen it but I have no desire to see it at all. I did enjoy the live action Beauty and the Beast but really all it did was made me want to watch the original. Disney has lost all their imagination, which is sad. But the fact that they are making live action movies out of their classic animated movies is beyond ridiculous.

I'm not opposed to the Disney live-action remakes, but they do seem to be cranking them out one after the other now. There was a bigger gap with the live-action remakes in the earlier years around when they did The Jungle Book in 1994.

I remember when the live-action 101 Dalmatians came out around 20 years ago and it received a lot of praise, which was mainly due to Glenn Close as Cruella. 102 Dalmatians didn't do as well.

We just had Dumbo, Aladdin (which was actually good), The Lion King soon, Maleficent sequel (Sleeping Beauty), Mulan coming up, and now The Little Mermaid.

One I didn't care for at all was the live Alice in Wonderland, so I never bothered with the Through the Looking Glass sequel.

Glenn Close was awesome!

This is just a cash-grab!

What next...a live-action version of Snow White?
