I read somewhere recently that when Jack Paar decided to leave The Tonight Show that the host spot was offered to Bob Crane who turned it down because he wanted to be an actor and the show was given to Johnny Carson.
I thought for a long time that Bob Crane would have been perfect to have been a host of a late night talk show and he would have really excelled at that. He was a nice looking, very personable man, I think he would have done great interviews, could be a little off color for the times, was musical, and would have been great, as great as Carson was. If this story is true, I think Bob Crane really missed out but seeing the times could see his position. Even such, Bob Crane was a wasted talent, and should have done more when Hogan’s Heroes went off the air. I think he was just typecast more than being a sex addict. But then we have Johnny (who was a treasure) who was an alcoholic, a complicated guy who couldn’t stay married. I think Bob Crane would have been more personable and less aloof. Dunno.
Would have Bob Crane done a good of a job or even a better job than Johnny Carson?
