I found this on Archive.org in early April.

This was a sitcom pilot for an adaptation of a Larry Shue play called The Nerd, which starred Robert Joy who originated the role on Broadway. It also starred Harley Jane Kozak, Toni Sawyer, M. Emmett Walsh, and John Dye.

This was created in 1989, but did not air on NBC until 1996.

Some information about the show from Wikipedia:

In 1989, NBC commissioned a sitcom pilot adapted from the play, with John Dye, Harley Jane Kozak and Robert Joy, who reprised his role. A series wasn't optioned but the episode was eventually broadcast in March 1996.

I can see why it wasn’t picked up for a full series.

Wow I can remember watching that back in 96. I never thought I would see anything on the topic ever again. Thank you for sharing this information!

Whenever I would search for The Nerd, I would net the nerd herd from Chuck.

I think it aired on a saturday night.

I wonder why they aired it at all.

Maybe a contractual thing?

I just read M. Emmett Walsh was alive and well. For some reason I thought he passed away some time ago.
