View Full Version : Who else here does NOT find Seinfeld funny?
SitcomsHeydayfan 05-12-2019, 12:10 AM I grew up on Three's Company, The Jeffersons, Gilligan's Island, Too Close For Comfort, Bewitched, Family Ties, Different Strokes, and Fresh Prince. Some of those I saw in reruns and some first run.
Those are my favorites and I like that style and type of comedy but I've tried watching Seinfeld multiple times and I BARELY if ever laugh! Seinfeld is TOTALLY different style of comedy than those sitcom favorites I grew up on right?
I mean what's funny about Jerry complaining or WHINING in a high pitched voice?? Kramer tries to be funny but it often falls flat. That bald chubby guy and that lady are barely funny at BEST.
To think that some people say this is the funniest show ever is almost CRIMINAL if it wasn't so INSANE! Seinfeld couldn't even hold Jack Tripper's jockstrap because Jack Tripper was infinitely more funny than Seinfeld in his wildest DREAMS!
P.S. If you do a search for "Seinfeld is NOT funny" you get almost 10 MILLION results!
Edward216 05-12-2019, 01:43 AM So you don't like it? So what, a lot of us do including me. That's the thing about sitcoms and humor a lot of it's subjective. You don't like Seinfeld that's fine then don't watch it. It's as simple as that.
Ed.
cfr1970 05-12-2019, 03:50 PM I remember it's original run during the 90's. Friends would rave about it and I tuned in a few times to see what it was all about. I just didn't "get" it. I found it boring and dumb and never watched again. At this time, I was in my early 20's and found it to be an "adult" show since all the characters were a generation older than me and that type of show just didn't interest me in the slightest.
At the time, I was into shows like Roseanne, 90210, Melrose Place, Friends, Living Single etc. Those were characters and themes I could identify with and relate. I just couldn't relate to Seinfeld at all.
It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I began tuning into Seinfeld reruns late at night. I started to get into it and this time I "got" it and found it funny. Not hilarious laugh out loud funny, but a chuckle here and there funny. It's no masterpiece in my opinion and I think it's way overblown to call it one of the best sitcoms ever like I see in so many lists.
I wouldn't even place it in my top 20 of favorite sitcoms...but many out there think it's the greatest show ever and that's ok too. I don't have to agree with them.
visaman666 05-12-2019, 05:01 PM At the time there were two camps. Those who found Home Improvement funny, and those who found Seinfeld funny. I thought Home Improvement was as funny as a Root Canal, but it consistently beat Seinfeld in the overnight ratings.
My favorite episode is The Library, who can ever forget Marion's epic poem?

TSMIV 05-12-2019, 05:30 PM Loved Seinfeld back in the day and think it's even funnier now in an era of hyper political correctness. That said, some of the humor may not work for younger people; the O.J. case jokes, Steinbrenner, the magic bullet/spitball bit, all the Mets and Yankees gags and guest stars. People born after those things happened may not get it.
I never liked Three's Company or The Jeffersons. I did like Family Ties. Home Improvement was funny in the beginning, but how many times could Tim Allen grunt and tell "more power" jokes and it still be funny? I think Tim Allen by himself is funny, but that show was never that great. By the 90s, the kids that grew up with family sitcoms were looking for something different and they got it with Seinfeld, but it's ok if someone doesn't like it. I despise M*A*S*H, but almost everybody else thinks it's hilarious.
Steve_uk 05-12-2019, 07:38 PM I was expecting something special after reading the Wikipedia entry that the show is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential sitcoms of all time, but after watching this snippet it just goes to show that the Writers Guild have an inflated sense of their own importance along with many others in the industry. https://youtu.be/PaPxSsK6ZQA
stevea 05-12-2019, 08:59 PM With me Seinfeld is a "certain episodes" kind of show. Like that airplane trip, where Jerry gets the first class treatment, there are just loads of laughs in that episode. Chinese restaurant, Soup Nazi, the kookie tax accountant. Certain scenes, like an episode where Kramer is getting Jerry illegal cable, and Jerry's former date gets in his face and reads him the riot act...how does he keep a straight face? The scene where Jerry and George are at the NBC president's apt., selling him on their pilot, and he's sick from the food Elaine sneezed on. The heaving just cracks me up. George trying to keep his girlfriend from hearing her answer machine, with his silly messages...loved it. The library cop reading Jerry the riot act...hilarious. George's faux heart attack and the visit to the holistic "doctor", LOL.
But other episodes other people rave about, ugh. Like the bubble boy...unwatchable, to me. And in the 90s, everyone going nuts over yada, yada. Please, overblown.
And don't get me started on that final episode. Ugh.

See, I never got into Gilligan's Island, Bewitched or Three's Company. I think Too Close for Comfort and Diff'rent Strokes are fine shows but to me they can't hold a candle to Seinfeld. Pretty much all the episodes are funny, imo. I think it's one of the greatest shows ever. But to each his own.

LOL! I didn't like Bubble Boy either, and the finale was AWFUL! I've only seen it once--the first night it aired.

I agree that the Dick York episodes were the best. It's kind of like the best Three's Company episodes were with Terri and Cindy as the blonde roommates. Not that there weren't good episodes with Chrissy because there were. It's just that the Terri/Cindy episodes were the best.
Of course Jack Tripper was the KEY to the entire show!
IllinoisTVFan 05-13-2019, 02:41 AM Never cared for either Seinfeld or Friends. Found neither funny and both overrated.
OH Nuts! 05-13-2019, 05:55 AM I never really hated or fell head over heels with the show—so I never understood all the hoopla.
My dream show from 1990 on is WINGS, which I’d take ANY DAY over Seinfeld.
Yong Fang 05-13-2019, 08:07 AM It’s not a favorite but I find it funny. To me Jerry is the straight man for the other three especially George and Kramer. George to me was the star of the show.
Yong Fang 05-13-2019, 08:09 AM I for one never thought Three’s Company was all that great. Pretty stupid show actually. It’s one ‘s opinion.
AMackII 05-13-2019, 08:17 AM I dont because at most times Seinfeld was very comedic
Willbo 05-13-2019, 08:43 AM Loved Seinfeld. As with any series there are clunker episodes but overall I think it is very funny. Loved Wings also. Just finished watching all 10 seasons of Friends and also enjoyed it. My kids were little in the original run and watched it sporadically back then. Enjoyed watching all episodes back to back.

How could you not find Jack Tripper's antics and physical comedy absolutely HILARIOUS?
Jack Tripper was even the Queen of comedy's (Lucille Ball) favorite! I would think anyone who isn't blind would find Jack Tripper funny if not hilariously funny.
SitcomsHeydayfan 05-13-2019, 10:49 AM I dont because at most times Seinfeld was very comedic
You don't find Seinfeld funny because Seinfeld was comedic?? Don't you mean Seinfeld wasn't comedic?
Even Seinfeld's stand up isn't that funny. Jay Leno blows away Seinfeld in stand up.
SitcomsHeydayfan 05-13-2019, 10:52 AM I never really hated or fell head over heels with the show—so I never understood all the hoopla.
My dream show from 1990 on is WINGS, which I’d take ANY DAY over Seinfeld.
That brings back memories! I've not heard that show's name in DECADES. I remember seeing it on the TV schedule but never saw it. Now I kinda wish I did.
So how would you describe WINGS?
loaferman 05-13-2019, 12:05 PM Like most shows Seinfeld had their prime, then declined. The early episodes they were finding their legs and the last couple of seasons declined. There were "funny" moments, but the show built itself on situations that mushroomed out of control and spiraled wildly based off something as mundane as Jerry having a NASA style pen. Some of the setups got too outrageous and the comedy turned into annoyance at times. I will say if you watch "The Contest" and don't find it funny you probably won't like much, the episode is dated now but was daring for the times.
Greenbeans 05-13-2019, 03:47 PM There's not a right or wrong answer. It's just what you prefer. "Three's Company" and "Gilligan's Island" rely on slapstick. Seinfeld is more intellectual/cultural. I like Seinfeld but I'm not going to dismiss "Three's Company" as unfunny, just because I don't find it funny. It's just not my sense of humor.
tvfan25 05-13-2019, 06:23 PM I've only seen one episode of Seinfeld and I could live without it. They only reason I watched it that one time was because my cable was out and it was the only thing on my local channels!
Babalu 05-13-2019, 07:23 PM With me Seinfeld is a "certain episodes" kind of show.
I agree. I haven't seen that many. People talked about it so I tuned in one week. I thought it was hilarious. Then the next week I hated it. Hated it. It was the episode where they wandered around a parking lot all show looking for their car. Then someone tells me that's their favorite episode.
With Seinfeld you could also like certain scenes since they often had little to do with the rest of the show. I loved the soup Nazi scenes, Kramer cooking in the shower, the episode when they set up a fake apartment in the building across the street just to have Chinese food delivered there, the Phil Rizzuto key chain, and most of all, the episode where Kramer sponsored the highway cleaning but since he couldn't afford to pay for it ran around the highway picking up garbage as he dodged traffic.

That's a good analysis.
But you gotta remember the biggest comedies and comic actors of all time are mostly slapstick because that's ALWAYS funny, even 1000 years from now!
Yet intellectual/cultural comedy can change with generations so a few generations or so down the road it might not be considered that funny anymore. That's why Three's Company is so popular in reruns. John Ritter's physical/slapstick comedy is still funny to people who were born AFTER he died!
I Love Lucy has been aired more than ANY other sitcom in history. Lucille Ball's favorite show was Three's Company! I rest my case!
I'd bet anything that Lucille Ball would NOT have liked shows like Seinfeld and Friends eventhough she may not have publicly criticized them.
stevea 05-13-2019, 07:50 PM Yeah it was a good analysis.
In the end it's to each her/his own. It's fun to express/read opinions but no one's gonna change their mind about Seinfeld or Jack Tripper or Gilligan because of someone else's opinion.
TSMIV 05-13-2019, 09:35 PM But you gotta remember the biggest comedies and comic actors of all time are mostly slapstick because that's ALWAYS funny, even 1000 years from now!
True, but Seinfeld had a ton of slapstick alongside of the pop culture jokes.

An incredibly well-written show that can be really funny - but you never get the sense that it’s trying to be. Great endearing characters. I just LOVE the show. I bought the entire series for $30. Best $30 I ever spent. You can probably find some eps on YT.

Wings was a really funny show with a unique setting that never got the attention of the other NBC comedies. It's in my top five of 90s sitcoms: Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, Wings, and Coach. There were so many good sitcoms in the 90s! We were so spoiled!

But it doesn't look like any of the actors from Wings have matched that success since right?

Much of the humor of Seinfeld is very New York centric to the point in which you can say that it's the fifth main character. In a nutshell, it's a sitcom that's more geared for US audiences' taste in humor. And most of the humor comes from watching the episode’s plot unfold. They aren't exactly, jokes you know are coming but laugh at anyway instead of jokes that surprise you. On the same token however, because Seinfeld prided itself on being a "show about nothing" (meaning that it had no real storylines), it isn't as universally funny (in what you can call “character based” humor like you may see on shows like Friends) as seeing people struggling in relationships and friendships (with actual emotional through lines).
yankeesrj12 05-15-2019, 02:23 AM I hated Seinfeld for the longest time. My dad raved about it and constantly quoted the series (and still does), but I never understood the hype.
Last year I binged the entire series on Hulu and loved it. Some weak episodes here and there, but overall, not a bad show at all. The characters all had their quirks and seeing those develop over time was also part of the humor. I actually really enjoy Seinfeld now. I guess my taste in humor has just changed over time?
Yong Fang 05-15-2019, 02:43 AM My elderly father who basically has disliked/hated every sitcom since the 1980', who basically watches FOX News and The Andy Griffith Show likes Seinfeld. He and my mother used to watch it when it came after the 6PM local newscast. I sort of went "Huh, you like Seinfeld?"
Again the show to me is somewhat hit or miss. I basically watch it for Jason Alexander. George makes the show. If I were a New York Jewish guy this would be me. Can't keep a job, gets easily stressed and frustrated, is a jerk, lived at home until he was 30. I see a lot in him in me.
1960'sTVfan 05-15-2019, 09:53 AM I don't watch TV shows made from 1980 and forward, so I've never seen a full episode of Seinfeld. However, I did watch a clip from one of the episodes on You Tube, a scene with the soup nazi, it was OK but I didn't really see the humor with a restaurant worker treating his customers badly.
My favorite era for TV shows is the 1960's up till about 1976. The 1950's had good shows too but I think the 1960's is better. Except for the westerns, I've never been a fan of westerns and can do without those. In my opinion, around 1977 is when TV shows started getting bad and unwatchable. ABC was the popular network in the late 1970's but I liked only a few of their shows. I liked Welcome Back Kotter, Three's Company, What's Happening, and The Love Boat but that's about it.
cbikle 05-15-2019, 10:34 AM Seinfeld is a funny & clever show, but never laugh-out-loud funny (like the Simpsons, IMO) and the show seemed to give us a window into the free time of a few hardcore New Yorkers, who all seem to have the same friends & acquaintances and who seem to get distracted by minutia that leads into comedic adventures.
Also, the OP would've made a better case if he hadn't listed about a dozen crappy shows as examples of "funny" sitcoms.
MikeLutton 05-15-2019, 06:16 PM never liked that show it not funny at all
Adamantium 05-15-2019, 06:28 PM I think Seinfeld is funny. But for a long time I was put off by the label it's often given as the greatest sitcom of all-time. So I got kind of bitter towards it. Mostly because my immediate favorites are shows that were low-rated and not very popular (my #1 favorite is "NewsRadio"). Around 2003 or '04, I started watching Curb Your Enthusiasm with Larry David, who co-created Seinfeld and for whom the George Costanza character is based on. That quickly became one of my favorite shows, so I decided to go back and give Seinfeld another look. I watched all the episodes and I quite enjoyed it. So now I'm a casual fan. "Casual" because I don't go ga-ga over it, but I still like it.
PhoenixAcres 05-15-2019, 08:31 PM It's a good show but I'll admit it's overrated.
Tubehead 05-15-2019, 08:50 PM i watched it couple times!! i just couldn't get into it! my friend really likes it!! to me its not really funny but just stupid & boring!! same goes for the office!! just bucnh of people in office talking! I also don't liked how i met your mother friends & especially the office!! another is two & an half man & mom!!
Schmoopie 05-15-2019, 11:43 PM I used to be a massive Seinfeld fanatic (I mean, my username is Schmoopie!) and I started watching Seinfeld when it first aired and became a huge hit. But I ended up getting rid of my DVD collection a while back because suddenly it just wawsn't funny anymore. I used to love Jerry Seinfeld and even saw him twice on stage. I don't regret that of course because both shows are awesome but I just don't find him funny at all any more. Not sure what happened to sour me on it, but it's just not for me. Never in a million years did I ever dream that would happen. I've been thinking about changing my user name, but I've had it for so long now...

Watch Jay Leno's stand-up on YouTube. He blows away Seinfeld especially in his prime with the Tonight Show.
Glad you finally came to your senses about unfunny Seinfeld!

That's the difference!
Shows like Three's Company and the Jeffersons ARE laugh out loud thanks to Jack Tripper and George Jefferson!
ABC is going to have a LIVE event on May 22 doing a Jeffersons and All in the Family episode with a new cast!

dee2364 05-19-2019, 07:19 AM I used to find Seinfeld funny but haven't watched it since the Michael Richards fiasco. I still quote the show, though.
SitcomsHeydayfan 09-17-2019, 03:45 AM Paying half a BILLION dollars for unfunny Seinfeld is sheer LUNACY even if you like the show! Crazy Netflix just did that!
I like slapstick/physical comedy/irreverent humor shows like Three's Company and The Jeffersons. 2 of the biggest movie comedies of ALL TIME are the Naked Gun and Airplane.
Now those are HILARIOUS & Seinfeld is nothing like that!
icecream 09-17-2019, 12:20 PM I agree about the Airplane! movie being funny (just the original Airplane, not the sequel). But I will take Seinfeld over Three's Company and The Jeffersons any day.

You're right, certain episodes, certain scenes. There's a scene where Seinfeld's latest girlfriend wants to break up with him because she doesn't find his comedy funny. She goes on and on about that in this drawl voice, and he's like, who are you to review comedy? You're just a cashier! The rest of the episode, I don't remember much about.
I also agree about the finding their car in the parking lot episode. People rave about this one, yet I found it an episode about nothing--a big bore.
The show did taper off in the last couple of seasons. They made a whole episode out of a co-worker of Elaine's thinking her name was Susie. It's kind of funny for a few scenes, but not a whole episode.
stevea 09-17-2019, 12:34 PM I agree about the Airplane! movie being funny (just the original Airplane, not the sequel). But I will take Seinfeld over Three's Company and The Jeffersons any day.

That's what I mean. Three's Company has a similar type of slapstick comedy.
But Seinfeld is a snoozefest in comparison. I'll never get why it's allegedly so popular.
