..., insists she's "so grateful"

Wu initially had a negative reaction to the news of Fresh Off the Boat's Season 6 pickup Friday on Twitter and Instagram (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/constance-wu-tweets-fresh-boat-renewal-dislike-1209752). "So upset right now that I'm literally crying. Ugh. F*ck." She followed that up with a "F*cking hell" tweet. When a Twitter user congratulated her on the "Great news :), Wu responded: "No it's not." Hours later, Wu clarified that her words were "not a rampage," (https://twitter.com/ConstanceWu/status/1126982405028556801) and that people were making the wrong assumptions. She followed that up with a tweet walking back her profane response: "Todays tweets were on the heels of rough day&were ill timed w/the news of the show. Plz know, Im so grateful for FOTB renewal. I love the cast&crew. Im proud to be a part of it. For all the fans support, thank u & for all who support my casual use of the word f*ck-thank u too." Fresh Off the Boat's renewal comes after Wu became more in demand thanks to the massive box office success last summer of Crazy Rich Asians. Critic Inkoo Kang wondered if Wu was unhappy with her Jessica Hwang character (https://twitter.com/inkookang/status/1126976805292765184). Kang wrote last November in Slate that Fresh Off the Boat's Season 5 treatment of Jessica Hwang was "such a disappointment," especially after Wu's brief reign as "multiplex queen" last summer. "The actress is as nimble as ever, but sometime last year, the writers seem to have forgotten what makes Jessica such a brilliant character," wrote Kang. "She still gets to throw flames, but now she’s forced to apologize for them, repeatedly. Her self-possession coarsened into self-absorption, Jessica has become yet another immature character in need of life lessons, alongside her middle- and high-school-age children. It’s a humiliating (and groan-inducing) turn, with insulting implications for the immigrant culture she represents... Fresh Off the Boat has made Jessica into something that was unimaginable just two years ago: a petulant, off-putting idiot (https://slate.com/culture/2018/11/constance-wu-fresh-off-the-boat-crazy-rich-asians.html). And since Jessica was by all accounts the show’s most interesting character, her decline has correspondingly tanked the show’s watchability." Fresh Off the Boat was renewed without creator and showrunner Nahnatchka Khan (https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/nahnatchka-khan-overall-deal-universal-television-1203143448/), who left 20th Century Fox TV for a new TV deal at Universal TV.

Maybe Constance would have been able to "walk back" her comments if she hadn't responded to that "great news" tweet by saying "no it's not," but I don't think many people are willing to believe she was referencing something else or having a "rough day."

FOTB is not the show it once was but I hope they can straighten things out next season.

Constance Wu: Fresh Off the Boat's renewal meant turning down a project I was passionate about (https://www.thewrap.com/constance-wu-fresh-off-the-boat-renewal-meant-turning-down-another-project/)

Wu (https://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2019/05/blind-item-6_11.html) released a lengthy statement (https://twitter.com/ConstanceWu/status/1127245692865523717) Saturday explaining why she was initially upset (http://www.pajiba.com/tv_reviews/putting-constance-wus-reaction-to-her-shows-renewal-in-context.php) over Fresh Off the Boat's renewal (https://blindgossip.com/renewed-and-crying/) for Season 6 on Friday. "I was disappointed in not being able to do that other project–Because that other project would have challenged me as an artist–that other project would have been really hard and not easy or pleasant at all," she wrote. Wu went on to apologize for the "ill-timing" of her tweets. “People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts–that conflict is part of being human,” she wrote. “So I can both love the show/cast/crew but at the same time be disappointed that I lost that other unrelated job. I appreciate those who have given me the space and faith to believe what I say about both parts of my heart.”

Constance Wu becomes a meme ahead of the upfronts (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/constance-wu-becomes-meme-new-returning-series-celebrations-1209935)

The Orville's Seth MacFarlane, Emergence's Allison Tolman and Sunnyside's Joel Kim Booster all copied the Fresh Off the Boat star with their similar "f*cking hell" reactions to getting picked up for next season.
