"Blindspot" Renewed for Fifth & Final Season at NBC

"Blindspot", starring Sullivan Stapleton and Jaimie Alexander, has been renewed for a fifth and final season by NBC. The pickup comes despite NBC’s recent decision to bench "Blindspot" for the May sweep.

"Blindspot" was a big breakout hit when it launched in fall 2015 behind "The Voice" on Monday. Its ratings took a hit once the series was moved to Wednesdays in Season 2 and further declined when it was relocated to Fridays at the start of Season 3.

While not a strong linear performer, "Blindspot" has done OK in delayed viewing and has an established fan base. With a significant DVR bump, the series is averaging a 0.9 among adults 18-49 in most current rating and 4.9 million viewers.

Additionally, "Blindspot" has been a strong seller and profit generator for producer Warner Bros TV internationally, including a lucrative deal with Netflix. For that reason, the studio previously had agreed to a license-fee reduction(s) from NBC to clinch a renewal.

Blindspot creator explains explosive Season 4 finale, promises "a pretty crazy ride" for the final season (https://tvline.com/2019/05/31/blindspot-recap-season-4-finale-episode-22-cliffhanger-explained/)

"You know, it’s so rare for a show like this to know it’s going to end," says creator and showrunner Martin Gero. "It’s such an incredible privilege to do these amazing episodes and really honor the show in a great way — to give people all of those fan moments and proper goodbyes, not only to our main characters, but also the dozen or so supporting characters that people love when they drop in. (Season 5) is a little more compact, so the storytelling is even more dynamic, and we know where we’re going. We know we’re going toward a very specific end now. This isn’t something where we have to set up Season 6 or Season 7. We can be a little more reckless than we’ve been, in a good way, as far as the outcome of some of these stories. Fans of the show are in for a pretty crazy ride."

Blindspot's shortened final season is being held until summer (https://tvline.com/2019/11/08/blindspot-final-season-summer-2020-premiere-date-nbc/)

Blindspot will end its five-season run with 13 episodes airing in summer 2020, but NBC has yet to announce a premiere date. The 13-episode season will be much shorter than previous seasons, which have spanned 22 to 23 episodes.

Blindspot's final season premiere date moved up to April due to coronavirus (https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/blindspot-season-5-premiere-date-nbc-1234570428/)

The fifth and final season of the NBC crime drama was originally scheduled to air over the summer. Instead, Blindspot's final season will premiere on April 30 in response to the coronavirus shutdowns.

Blindspot creator weighs in on the series finale, says he'd be "super open" to a spinoff (https://deadline.com/2020/07/blindspot-series-finale-martin-gero-interview-spoilers-zapata-spinoff-1202993594/)

Creator Martin Gero says of the NBC crime drama starring Sullivan Stapleton and Jaimie Alexander ending after five seasons: "You know, we really always had kind of a five-season plan in the back of our minds, and so when it came time to go to NBC and present our vision for the fifth season, we very confidently asked, ‘Could we wrap it up?’ You know, it’s so rare for a network TV show to know it’s ending, and this is a show that was somewhat serialized and really required some architecture to allow it to come into landing. So, we were thrilled that they agreed with us and gave us these very exciting 11 episodes to bring the show in for a landing." As for a potential spinoff, Gero says, "I’d be super open to it. I mean, Audrey is part of the…she’s a star I think since the beginning, and if anyone wants to do a Zapata P.I. spinoff, they know where to find me. I’d love to do it."
