CBS has renewed "Madam Secretary" for a sixth season.

That would be great news for fans of the show, who had been vocal in their support as the political drama found itself heavily on the bubble for the first time. "Madam Secretary" recently topped USA Today’ annual Save Our Shows poll.

"Madam Secretary" To End with 10-Episode Sixth Season
by Peter White
May 15, 2019

"Madam Secretary" will end with its forthcoming sixth season. CBS revealed Wednesday that it will finish the Téa Leoni-fronted show with a 10-episode order this year.

CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl revealed the news at the network’s upfronts press breakfast.

“They’re going to do 10 episodes in the fall and tie up the storyline. We’re happy and excited to do that for Téa, the cast and the audience. It’s hard when a show ‘poof goes away.’

We like to be able to do this and send the show off with a great deal of respect and celebration. Everyone appreciates when we are able to do that.”

Madam Secretary creator on the final season revamp: “It was like launching a new series" (https://tvline.com/2019/09/03/madam-secretary-cast-changes-season-6-tea-leoni-interview-keith-carradine-leaving/)

It was originally an inside joke on the CBS drama that Téa Leoni's Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord would become President McCord. But with each season, the joke became less funny. “We found a way to have the best of both worlds, where we decided to jump ahead and make her president,” says creator Barbara Hall. "And we get the fun of picking and choosing the moments that we go back to, so that we don’t have to take even four or five episodes to do a whole campaign.”
