Hi, i have decided to do my dissertation at university on the cartoon family, it will mainly be a comparison between the simpsons and the flintstones, with a little bit of family guy, king of the hill etc
Do any of you superior flintstones fans have any comments, recurring similarities or just anything you have to say about the cartoon family in general, i would be very appreciative in hearing any replies.

Well, all I can say is that the Flitstones rock, but I don't care for the Simpsons very much.

I like the Flintstones better than the Simpsons. I was raised on the Flintstones. I remember when they used to come on TBS in the afternoons, and everyday after school I would come home and watch it. I never did get into the Simpsons that way. I've watched some episodes, so don't get the feeling that I'm dissing on a show that I've never seen.

The Flintstones just had calming humor, while the Simpsons just have the dysfunctional (did I spell that right? I'm a horrible speller) family humor.

I could never get into The Simpsons for some reason, so I would have to say The Flintstones! :D

Well, besides the obvious similarities of both programs being animated prime-time sitcoms The Flintstones shares many common elements with the Simpsons;

1. Both programs are satires of society in general and suburbia specifically, The Flintstones parodying 1950's culture and The Simpsons parodying 1980's culture.

2. Both series feature more-or-less dysfunctional relationships (Fred battling with Wilma and Barney-a situation taken verbatim from the show's inspiration, "The Honeymooners", and Homer's trials with Bart, Lisa and Grandpa.)

3. Both Mr. Slate and C. Montgomery Burns are type-A personality bossess who instill naked fear into their employees (especially Fred and Homer.)

4. Did I mention the identical five-o'clock shadows that both leads sport? (Actually an old limited animation technique used to cut down on the number of drawings.)

5. Both the communities of Bedrock and Springfield are the county seats.

The Flintstones by far The Simpsons is just too Vulgar and Homer is just too dumb

Both work great in their different ways but I don't think I could choose one out of the two since I think they're both trying to do different things.

To me, the only similarities between the two are that they are both animated and they both are about families. Otherwise, I feel they contain main differences.

The Flinstones were about a fictitious family (modern stoneage). [Modern stoneage is an oxy moron isn't it?] Their characters seemed to do realisitc things, but the unrealistic stoneage setting was so important to the theme of the story. Cavemen driving cars with their feet??? Great imagination!

The Simpsons is set is what seems to be a somewhat normal town of Springfield. Normal everything except the lifestyles of the characters. The characters act "too" abnormal for even the stangest of families. That makes that show so funny.

Also on the Flinstones, Barney and Betty play a big part in the show, where on the Simpsons, their family (The Simpsons,... duh)is usually the center of attention.

The Simpsons is funny like the Flinstones, but in a different manner. I think the Flinstones ended at the right time, and the Simpsons maybe have gone on too long.

BeavFan, I think your alst comment about the Simpsons going on too long is right on, but extremely understated.Even a show that I might like (Flinstones) would take it way too far going on 15 years (it ended after 6 years :D)

Man this is a tuff one......I have to say Simpsons, i dont know i still love The Flintstons.

The only simularity I can see between both shows,is they,re both primetime cartoons.The Flintstones was the first cartoon show to be primetime.The Simpsons being the second.Some of the humour on The Simpsons,would not have been acceptable for television back when The Flintstones came out in the 1960s.Most of The Flintstones,humour originates from traditional sitcom themes.Whereas The Simpsons seem to go beyond clean traditional comedy.They,ve even had more cartoon incarnations of famous entertainment media stars than The Flintstones ever did by far.However,I,m equally as big a fan of The Simpsons as I am of The Flintstones.Though The Simpsons have gone on for so long,I,ve actually become somewhat tired of the show.I have to agree with the last two people,who feel the show has been on too long.The Flintstones have had three movies.The first one being The Man Called Flinstone.The other two being live action versions of the show.Which leads me to wonder if The Simpsons will ever have a movie of their own in the future.

Say, Domino, it's been over a year....how'd your dissertation go? Did you graduate with honors? Did your professors have you committed to the local nut-house? WE NEED CLOSURE!!!
