Am I the only one who never really bought that this alleged kidnapping ever actually happened? There’s just way too many holes.

I think it could have been staged, or maybe just made up by Grundhofer, but:

1) There's the eyewitness in the parking garage (unless he was paid off),
2) The discovery of the note in the garage (in theory could have been planted)
3) I'm assuming they recovered SOME evidence that Grundhofer himself couldn't have produced.

Lots of holes and oddities in the story, yes, but it would also be a lot for Grundhofer to stage/dream up, for apparently little gain to any party. Unless it was all to make John Henderson's life miserable? So I think it did happen but perhaps there's information Grundhofer decided to leave out/modify. Maybe even including the kidnapper description, if for some reason he did not want the real perpetrator identified.

Grundhofer was said to be under a lot of scrutiny at the time maybe he created this hoax as a way to release some of it?

Excellent points. Those are also why I don't buy this was staged. Too many small little things. Though.. I think everyone at one point or another has pointed to the kidnapping suspect looking like Hank Hill. Had this kidnapping happened 10 years later with that composite? we'd all say he was full of it.

It is quite strange for the FBI to not solve a case like this. There's other's, obviously.. What's the one where the wife was kidnapped and never seen again? But this seemed to be total amateur hour and for Henderson or whoever it was to get away while screwing up SO much is pretty astounding.

I'm with the disgruntled employee / account holder.. Was it Henderson? Maybe.. I haven't seen all the evidence, but if I recall, the biggest thing against it was that the guy in the garage didn't ID him.

I'd bet there's DNA on the note that could solve this.. But there's no incentive now as the SOL has expired. And I'd suspect Henderson is dead.. He was in his 60's back in the day this happened.

I don't think it was staged. A high flying bank executive would have nothing to gain and A LOT to lose by staging this. I am a MN resident, btw, and back when it happened (I remember) and now I believe it was just botched and poorly planned.

According to almost every article I read, seems that it was pinned down to disgruntled ex-employees that were laid off unfairly. I don't think the eyewitness was paid off, he seemed completely normal in the segment and did not come off as shady. Neither did that other poor guy they hassled.
