View Full Version : Molly Ringwald in Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)
RetroGuy2000 04-02-2019, 01:45 AM Here is the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5fM8HbKEfw). Despite the obviously small budget of this film, Molly did not call this project her "worst job ever" (that was her sole guest appearance on FOL). This was a bit of a cheese-fest, but she had a very big role, so it was probably worth it to her. It was also originally shown in 3D.
Lorimar Television 04-02-2019, 03:29 AM LOL that was totally a Molly Parker line

What do you think I am, you scrawny nerf-bag, I'm a woman! Now let's get out of this dump!
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2019, 09:34 AM Hahaha! Cute trailer---"nerfbag"??
Wow, I never heard of this "movie"! And I can't believe Molly got mentioned by name in the trailer---I always thought of "Sixteen Candles" as her big break. I never dreamed she would have been "a name" before that. Did "Tempest" make her a minor name before she hit it big?
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2019, 02:40 PM I guess she really was the natural choice for that role!

Wow, this movie is on Amazon Prime, which I have.
I mean, I'm not gonna watch it or anything, but wow, this movie is on Amazon Prime
Torgo 04-02-2019, 02:51 PM Saw this in the theater when released. Fun movie.
I own it in the 11 movie DVD set Strange Things. The set also includes Krull and the Joey Lawrence 80's horror flick Pulse.

I remember seeing previews, or possibly a commercial for it when it ran on television.
Thanks for letting me know it's on Amazon Prime, which I have. I may have to watch it this weekend.

That's your only comment on those contributions?? ;)
You're sounding like someone else who used to point out negative things here, lol.
(and I know, I saw it earlier, ugh...oh well)

Sorry, '80s. I did like the "dump of a school" comment Molly made.
SitcomsHeydayfan 04-04-2019, 01:19 AM Just hearing that movie title takes me back to childhood! I remember that movie was on Pay per view back in the 80s after it ran in the theaters.
I remember this really creepy looking bald alien creature in the promo.
'80sSitcoms 04-04-2019, 03:55 PM Another one of my favorite Molly moments from the series!

The film came out a week before Return of the Jedi, so it had no real chance at the box office.
I don't remember it running on PPV (we didn't even get basic cable), but I remember seeing adverts, presumably when it aired on broadcast TV. I don't think I ever saw it.

She deserves that A! Her spelling, at least, has improved! ;)

WOW.
That movie totally got "Nancied"!
It'd sure be interesting to see what position it opened in, and then what position it fell to in successive weeks---and how many weeks it even stayed in theaters!

Haha! It did! One week in the sun, and then overshadowed, never to return to the limelight...

Here's that info (https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekly&id=spacehunter.htm).
Week 1: #2, grossed 8.8 million
Week 2: #4, grossed 5.2 million
Week 3: #9, grossed 2.0 million
Week 4: N/A, grossed 0.5 million on the weekend
The film was pulled at that point, having been already dropped from 881 theaters.
Lorimar Television 04-05-2019, 11:56 PM Yikes it really Pippa’d.
TV Guy 04-06-2019, 04:23 AM Molly said her worst job was guest starring on FOL after they sh*tcanned her. So Spacehunter was a step up.

The paycheck certainly was better, and she had a bigger role. I'd definitely call that a step up.

Holy cow! That's actually a really successful beginning!
#2?? #4, the very week "Jedi" premiered?? I thought it'd be below #10 that week! Whoa!
I mean, Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" opened #8 its opening week---#8!! It too was pulled out of theaters some weeks later, but look at what a cult classic it has become thanks to home video in the late 1980s. But can you call "Spacehunters" a cult classic? I never even heard of this until this board.

Some films do okay at the box office, but just don't become beloved cult classics. It's no disrespect to Molly to say that this film just wouldn't be her big break... but she would soon have three films that would forever be her calling cards, and would forever become part of 1980s pop culture. I'd say they're possibly even culturally significant American films, being time capsules of a time beloved by millions.

Oh, for sure!
I feel sorry for her in this time period though, perhaps so excited to see her film opening #2 at the box office, only to bomb out faster than you can say "scrawny nerfbag". First getting ousted from FOL, then this film (assumedly) obliterated by "Return of the Jedi", again halting stardom for Molly. She could have been very upset and frustrated, so that it makes it all the sweeter that she struck teenage gold with her John Hughes trilogy that was on the horizon for her! :)
