The character Grandpa Henry (James's father) played by Richard Ward was only in three episodes and he had a good chemistry with other actors. The episode where he visit from New Orleans with his fiancé that shared his room was pretty funny.
I think if they made him a regular cast to appear more frequently, especially after John Amos left would have made the show more solid. He could have fill the void left by departing James-or departing Florida in the next season for that matter.
He is as good actor as John Amos or Ester Rolle and as funny too. And probably would have gave Goodtimes more substance and quality. One can only imagine :)

Well, he only appeared one time in season six when Florida came back. So that might not be a major factor for lack of more appearance by him.
Writers in show could have wrote him in by saying that he moved to Chicago to be close to his grand children after James's apparent death. So he could appear more frequently on the show.
And it probably would have been fun seeing him lock horn with Bookman like James did :)

What was with Norman Lear and the name Henry? You had Henry Jefferson, and then Florida's husband was Henry.
I bet Henry is real person name as there are many example where producers or actors use a real person name to name a character in a show they are associated with.
For example, Mike Evans is real person name (GoodTimes creator) which was given to Ralph Carter character as Michael Evans.
Or in Sanford&Son, Fred Sanford was Redd Foxx's brother real name, and Grady Wilson character was Lamont's real name Grady Demond Wilson.
Or it could happen in reverse where a character name is given to a real person.also. For example, Ralph Carter sons are named Michael and James :)

Thanks for correction. That explain why he wasn't there for Thelma's wedding.

Look like he was sick at that time because the actor died right after season 6 ended
